Alright everyone! Get out your walking canes, running shoes, and bitter attitudes it's time to play HOUSE!

ERmm .

Ok, so sunday, after diving on saturday I woke up with the usual aches and pains and a very sore pinkie toe. Adam thought it was from me stubbing it on something but it hurt so bad I couldnt stand on it. Plus I didn't remember stubbing it. I've been able to see no bite site, but the toe is swollen, and sore to a very gentle touch, but can be wiggled on its own. I tried ice, which seemed to just make it worse the next time I stood on it. I then tried eurax cream which seemed to help numb it.

Monday I woke up with the same thing on the middle toe of the same foot. Looking around the bedroom shows no signs of spiders of any kind (after the recent removal of a number of large huntsmen) the middle toe did seem to show a faint bite area, but nothing obvious.
Tuesday both toes are still sore and swollen but I can walk without limping.

Anyone have ideas on what might have done this?

^_^

Indeed. I've got no ideas, either.

Has it gotten any better?

Well, my dad woke up feeling like he'd stubbed his toes but couldn't remember stubbing them one day, turned out he had gout. But you're in a pretty low-risk group (female, vegetarian) for that to happen.

Well, you aren't dead, so its not a funnelweb spider.
You aren't sweating, shaking and retching so its not a redback spider.
Cockroaches can and do bite. Brown dogs ticks and fleas will bite humans.
Those little dark green ants, or the silver tailed bull ants bite like crazy.
Could be an airborne attack from a scotch grey mosquito. If they get you in a joint area, it can swell and be hot to touch.
If it was bedbugs more than just one toe would be eaten.

Bedbugs would also leave red lumps and itch like crazy, wouldn't they?

I'm voting spider too. Either that or you've stepped in/on something. Do you squash & tap your shoes before you put them on? I can't imagine it'd be easy for it to get your toes two days in a row while you are in bed, shoes seem more likely.

*pinches arm* yep I'm still alive.

By wednesday night the swelling had gone down for the most part and it didn't hurt quite as much. Second bite seems ok, first bite still a little sore. Of course I'd been on heavy painkillers for other things so maybe they do still hurt

*shudder* I don't even want to consider cockroaches in the bed, even if they're in every house. I had them in the apt I grew up in till we moved to the house when I was 8 *shudder* I'm still traumatized by them. {Of course having a friend jump on me at 3 in the morning in romania because the cockroaches were going to fall off the wall and then see that one had fallen right onto her pillow didn't help get over my childhood fears}

Calla, still warm up here, I've been sans footwear except for my flip flops for outside, which come to think of it, may have harbored something. I have a feeling I'm going to start double checking my shoes now

Bren, the dark green ants, are those the ones that bite then itch for about two weeks? Have very very near impossible to see hint of green on their tails and otherwise just look like a regular black ant?
Are the silver tail bull ants the one with the light white/ silver back end? I've noticed those around the house.

Sounds like you have both ants like me. The silver ones don't usually bother you unless you stand on their nest.
Yes the green/black ants itch for weeks.

Keep an eye on the toes. If it is a spider bite, they can ulcerate. If it does, apply medicinal honey to heal it.

If you were diving, maybe you picked up a minute bit of stinger jellyfish tentacle and got stung that way?

OOOOCH I'd never dive barefoot in the sea Besides aussie waters scare me, I have a full sized dive skin for when I don't need my wetsuit, and boots or socks for my feet. Granted the biggest reason is cause my fins hurt like anything if they're worn against bare skin.
Wetsuit and boots fit so snuggly that it's a bit of a fight to get them off, not sure anything could have gotten down there.

Since there was no itching (gaa I hate green ants) I guess it was a spider. *makes mental note not to stand on any ants nests*

Too many new biting things to lean about, poison ivy is easy, you guys have everything else but poison ivy!

No poison ivy but you obviously haven't encountered stinging nettles yet. Mainly a rainforest plant.
Lantana can be nasty to the skin. My hubby got scratched when in a search party for a missing child (found safe) and the welts were raised and sore for days and he had a high fever.

No raccoons but we have just about every species of possum including the very cute feather glider.

We also have all sorts of wallabys and kangaroos from 1ft high through to over 6ft. We nearly skittled one on the way home in the car the other evening.

*A tip for Aussie drivers: If you see one, watch to make sure the mate isn't going to run across the road as well. Quite often you have to avoid not just one, but two.

Stupid things really; I have had one run straight into the passenger door while driving. That was interesting trying to explain to the insurance company that the dent was caused by a kangaroo hitting my car, not my car hitting the kangaroo.

I also had one change its mind while hopping across the road and turned around and fell over in front of the car.
He kept his head down and came out unscathed behind the car.

Bren, there are a lot of different species of stinging nettles that live all around the world (including the USA). Last summer in Minnesota (central northern USA) I found a several acre area in a wooded area that was solid nettles in between the trees o.O

Lantana really That one I never knew!

Our property is clear of it, but it's around the neighbors and of course we've spotted it plenty out on walks.

Not sure if I've ever specifically spotted stinging nettles here in Oz, Adam keeps telling me just don't touch anything, which is hard as I'm always either falling down, or running after something to photograph.

Driving inlandish from melbourne to briz we rescued an echidna from the highway, otherwise have managed to not hit anything so far.

Seems I'm back to normal (sort of ) now, and the toes havent fallen off (ya I was scared they would)
