Hello everyone. What makes you dream? I ask this question because i used to almost never dream, but lately i have been having several vivid and creepy dreams each night. It is just weird to me.

i'm no dr... but i'd have to think its your imagination. and what you dream of all depends on how active your imagination is... myself, my dreams would scare people

It's a much-debated subject among psychologists...

I like the mental simulation theory - (in a nutshell) you go through scenarios in your head while you're asleep so that you're more prepared for different situations when you're awake.

If I eat sweets I have horrible dreams. Have you changed eating habits lately?

Trust me there is a huge and i mean huge diffrence between just regular nightmares and sleep/night terrors.

To answer the question i havent changed much if anything in my life, the only change i have made is concerning my "friends".

It is belived that nightmares occure during the REM stage of sleep, while terrors occure during the non-REM stage.(i know im being a bit vauge with the sleep stages, but bear with me)

While a nightmare is a bad sometimes terrifying dream, upon wakeing you can usually rember it fairly well every time you have one, with night terrors in most occurances you cant rember it. With haveing a night terror upon wakeing you can expect to "see" someone standing in the room, or in most cases snakes and/or spiders.

Most people who have a night terror dont rember the dream. There are quite a few people who can rember parts of the dream or the whole dream.

This is all in my own experiance and what i have heard/read, dont take everything i have said to heart untill you do some research on the matter. If i am incorect on part or all of what i have said, i would love to be informed and corrected.

*s.

Also, yes, nightmares and night terrors are quite different. My roommate's father suffers from the latter, and apparently, it's intense.

Entering a rem state is what makes me dream...... !

I remember dreams almost every time I wake (even from naps)

I think the distinction is 'remember dreams' vs 'don't remember dreams'

We all dream.... even the dog does, if his little srabbling leggies are anything to go by!

There was a member here named Oleta who actually studied this type of thing.
As for night terrors, well, there's been a tv show on following the study of people with sleeping disorders/problems at a specialist sleep lab in england..wow.
Everything from night time "ticks" ie not being able to stop your foot from rocking, turns into kicking etc...then where people really do believe that they are being covered in spiders, or they are fighting someone.
I have bad dreams, and do not sleep well, but can say 100% night 'terrors' can cause a lot of damage to your lifestyle and are much worse than a standard nightmare. i bet some of those people in the sleep clinic would pay money to have a nightmare..

I remember reading in another post that Melatonin can be used to help you sleep, but too much would make you have nightmares and a bad sleep. Would taking a little too much of thise to get a nightmare be bad?

What does that mean, Bob? "Till the cows come home." Where have the cows been?

A drug dependancy for sleep is never good.
however, i say, if you are going to do this, smoke some fine 'erb instead of popping pills
