about the bettas in cups....

How else do you propose to house over 100 bettas when the other tanks have filtration that is too powerful for them and may have fish that will nip their fins or just plain eat them?

It drives me insane when people claim that all 2-5 gallon tanks are good for are bettas. If I wanted a betta, I'd buy a $5 critter keeper or a large bowl. If I buy a $50 5 gallon tank (actually more for the heater and gravel etc.), I want something a little different.

Get a bigger tank.

Edit:
Oh yeah, another thing, when someone's answer to a problem is to "get a bigger tank". . . I don't think many people realize that some of us can't afford everything we want...

If you can't afford or don't care to keep your fish properly, for the love of Ford don't keep them at all. Fish are living creatures, not ornaments for your living room. If you can't handle taking care of them, find a new hobby. Take up painting or something, even if you have no talent the end result will look a lot better than a tank full of dead fish. I'm a student. I have my own money issues. I can't afford a 125 gallon tank, so no matter how cute those red cap orandas in the store are, I don't buy them because I don't have the resources to give them a proper home.

That's the thing that peeves me the most. People who treat fish like objects and use stupid excuses to keep them in deplorable conditions even if they know better. "They're just fish, if they die a horrible death because I don't treat them properly I can just go to Wally World and get more for $2." ] How many times have I heard that one?

Simple Answer: Dont keep 100 bettas!!
Keep a manageable number like my LFS does, 10 and no more. When those 10 sell, get 10 more.

So are you saying that we should order bettas daily? My store averages about 7 to 15 bettas a day in sales, depending on the day and if we have any sales going on.

Also, dead and dying? we change their water daily, and we take all sick fish back into ISO for treatment, which are later returned to the sale floor when 100%.

An industry that still pictures goldfish in tanks or bowls.

Period.

My biggest peeve would be Black Brush Algae!! :#(

Next would be folks who like to make themselves seem more knowledgeable than they are. Of course this happens everywhere, but on forums such as this it usually presents itself as someone answering questions by providing reams and reams of information, usually gathered from many other sources without credit, without any kind of personal experience to back it up.

Lastly, it would be the fact that once I get my tanks set up the way I want them and everything seems to be holding steady and the fish are doing well I get bored and want to try something else.... (I guess you were right Oleta, about me and chaos )

Oh, and always the cost. Even in Canada things always cost too much, especially when you consider the fact that a lot of people think of fish as the king of the "throw away" pet...

On the question of Bristlenose aesthetics, I have this to say.

I once saw a documentary about the Surinam Toad on TV, back in the days when I thought it was worth having a TV in the house. If anyone has seen how those things reproduce, then they will know that their appearance is seriously freaky looking. The females carry the eggs on their back, and the tadpoles hatch out and burrow into the skin, until they've developed to a certain size, whereupon they all leave. When that happens, the females end up with big holes all over them, and look to my eyes at least as if they have leprosy. Gives me the shudders looking at them. Eeeww.

Bristlenoses, unfortunately, remind me of this. I aadmit they are superlative algae eaters, and work extra hard at the task, making them wonderful acquisitions if you have lots of algae in your aquarium to devour. The trouble is, I couldn't look at one in an aquarium of mine wihtout being reminded of those Surinam Toads, and they'd give me the shudders for that reason. It's a personal thing, and many people think that Bristlenoses are cute. But they clash with my personal aesthetic in a particularly visceral manner.

I wouldn't stop people from keeping them, far from it: especially given that they have MANY devoted fans here, who will give them assiduously tended homes and good lives. But I suspect I'll have to develop a far lower sensitivity to things that make me squirm before I could keep one.

Each to their own.

Everyone should be nice to jellyfish. We are, in large, trapped by the currents of life around us. No more jellyfish discrimination!

Oh yeah, and phish too, though mobile, are trapped in the tanks we put them into. Would you, as a phish, enjoy the tank you spy into from afar?

I too have lfs/lfs employee peeves, but they don't apply to all lfs or their employees.

There are obviously some rules in this hobby, but many grey areas as well. I get tired of people who preach by certain rules such as one inch per gallon. New things are being learned and discovered all the time and with careful thought, planning, and research we shouldn't be afraid to experiment a little bit...and be able to share those experiences with others without fear of being attacked.

LFS employees who seem to think that the fish are just "objects"!!! A couple of weeks ago I bought some fish at a store (that is usually very good), and the girl who got the fish out of the tank was whipping the net around in the tank so fast that she literally killed a couple of fish! I was pretty shocked when I saw that. Poor things.

I keep tanks in the public so mine are...
People telling me that I made the water dirtier, after a water change, gravel siphon.
Kids that hit the glass, and parents who let them.
The people that tell me,lets catch that one for lunch!
Guys that tell me they never do water changes and all their fish are alive since 1985.
People who look at my tanks from one inch away.
Clients who insist on overstocked tanks because, "there aren't enough fish in there"
Clients who feed their fishes like dogs, everytime they come to the surface.
People that use weekend feeders because all the fish will starve.
People at the local zoo who feed the koi popcorn.
LFS employees who don't like fish and don't own tanks.

Simple Answer: Dont keep 100 bettas!!
Keep a manageable number like my LFS does, 10 and no more. When those 10 sell, get 10 more. My LFS solved that Solution by putting dividers in their biggest tanks and some of the smaller ones, and putting the bettas in behind the dividers. Also, Bettas are usually pretty good with other fish that dont resemble Bettas, so I think most of them would be fine in a tank with say, White Clouds, Neons, Glowlights, Pencilfish, etc.

Bettas in Cups are also one of my major pet Peeves, there is no reason in the world for a LFS to stock that many bettas. In my opinion, a few healthy bettas would win over many more customers than many sickly/dead/dying ones, as in the cups I have always seen.

Well so it says..
Whats your pet peeves on the hobby of fish keeping????

I'll go first

1.LFS's that don't know what there doing.
2.Customers who don't ask questions, or don't do there research on there fish.
3.Tank Overstocking.
4.Dyed fish.
5.Prices of things for your fish.
6.people touching the glass
7.my kid putting stuff in the tank every so often
8.The "get a bigger tank people" who don't explain why, or back it up at all.
9.The people I'm friends with that want to feed my community fish to my oscars!!
10.People who buy oscars, for the fact they eat live foods alone.
11.Cleaning the dang thing
12.The fact I only have two petstores in my city.
13.I'm sure there's more that I just forget at the moment.

Go ahead, tell me what you don't like.

Brissle Nose ugly?? Shish, i wouldn't waste my breath talking to those kinds of people. Brissle Noses are freaky looking, but in the best possible way! And, my GF got me to keep some because she thinks they are cute...

My biggest hate about this hobby is lack of knowledge. My own, to be precise. I hate not knowing how to make my sick fish better (not that i've had many), i hate that there are diseases i just can't cure and they are caused by things i just can't understand. I just don't like seeing creatures in my care suffer

I guess this relates to that earlier post about discus... if you haven't had the problem and cured it, or kept that specific species... then i guess you shouldn't be offering opinions on it. So i generally don't.

My next hate would be the lack of knowledge from those in the 'fish industry' in my region. But at least i've found a good LFS that's very good with Cichlids, even though they don't really approve of my Oscar love!!

Well, most of all the issues that have been mentioned are certainly pet peeves of mine espescially the last one
that was posted
"kids who put their dirty hands in tanks"
"parents who let kids put their dirty hands in tanks"
Thats certainly one of the top ones for me, or vice versa with
"parents who let their kids come to your house and play around with your fish stuff and then blame you for having it around cuz you dont have kids"
Another one that really irks me is,
The guy at the best LFS on the island says clown loaches only rarely exceed 4 inches and never more than 6, even after I brought in photos to show him of Keith's massive clowns. The guy still keeps trying to sell them to me!
Also, People who know they should do water changes and still dont.
People who claim fish dont need water changes or water conditioner because "that wasnt how it was done in my day"
