I bought mine at Sears. It's a compelling mixture of cheap alloyed metal and rawhide. If I use it like my numchuks, it darn well hurts too

Our instructor was named SGT Patterson. Don't know what his first name is (we just called him 'PTI' for Physical Training Instructor). The fight was somewhere in Mexico. He says he won't fight in the US because they don't allow elbows and that's one of his favorate moves against anyone he closes with. We spent a lot of time training with elbows and hammerfists (hence the occasional broken rib even through body armor). We do the same body hardening stuff in MCMAP that the muay thai fighers do (kicking eachother in the thick nerves in the legs and stuff like that to deaden them).

That's exactly what I'm talking about Aggie..

I've seen a 1 year thaiboxer defeat someone
with a black belt in 2 martial arts..
By defeat I mean over in 3 moves with a hospital trip,
2 cracked ribs and concussion.. Pretty scary.

If you guys know some good stretches for my legs and hip flexors any help appreciated. Have a lot of muscle tightness from old injury.

Who is your instructor and which UFC was he in ?
You raised my curiousity and now I want to go rent the tape !

I've got experience in MCMAP (Marine Corps Martial Arts), a system of fighting based on karate, kung fu, jujitsu, but mostly on muay thai. The only difference in it and all of those is that it's combat, not sport based. It's pretty involved, but very dangerous, since we're not taught to strike the areas of the body traditionally stuck in sport martial arts. For example, round house kicks almost always go to the side of the knee, vertical hammerfists to the center of the back of the neck, and stomps to the joints and head. My last instructor was 5'6" and 150 lbs and the day before he started teaching my company he won a UFC fight against a 330 pound Russian fighter by shattering both his knees and collapsing his trachea with MCMAP fighing (he even showed us the video, it was really awesome, the guy didn't die, he just had to go to the hospital and have a tube put down his throat). When we practice the upperbody stikes we have to wear ceramic/kevlar body armor, and we still had broken ribs. It doesn't have the finess that kung fu or karate possesses, but it has nearly unmatched lethality, but that's what we designed it for.

I haven't seen Hero yet but I will for sure..
As far as I'm concerned Jet Li's the Bruce Lee of
today..

And your 4 years of kickboxing would render most of the experts here useless in no time.. Unless they have grappling skills and you have none. So don't feel belittled..

When I was a teen I was in this mixed martial arts tournament when I was in Tae-Kwon-Do.. There were Kung Fu guys there too.. The only 2 kickboxers there, totally cleaned up their opponents in seconds. Glad I didn't have to fight them !

i like to watch the film 'kickboxer', but purely on a cheesey/entertainment value.. if it was 'real life', van damme the ballet dancer would totally get his head demolished by the thaiboxer.

Ninjas never thought they could fly.. They are masters of the shadows.. Concealment and stealth attack.
Kung Fu 'Grandmasters' could fly, but only in the movies.. Not in real life of course.

The old kung fu movies would show some old guy floating to a rooftop. That whole flying is now blown all out of proportion 'matrix-style' now in the modern special effects in movies today.... As is stopping mid air to give a flurry of 25 kicks or so.. Although these type effects look cool sometimes.. It gets way overblown...

A ninja's main weakness is that they think they can fly, when really it's a physical impossibility. That's why the ninja was killed in 30 seconds.

Also, pirates have guns, so it wouldn't matter if ninjas could fly or not.

"It's a known fact that ninjas are easily killed by pirates."

Ever watch UFC ?

When I was a kid, I thought ninjas ruled.
Then UFC arrived to the screen..

Someone who cross-trained in kickboxing and grappling, knocked down then knocked out a ninja in less than 30 seconds.. The ninja was a bloody mess in the face area. But less than 30 seconds after that the ninja was able to get up and walk away..

That was the most shocking fight I've seen as I immediately assumed the ninja would win..
Still have alot of respect for ninjitsu though because outside the ring they would use stealth, poisons etc..

I've studied Karate, Tae Kwon Do, Kickboxing, and now T'ai Chi and was always tried to copy any Kung Fu move I've seen. I love one staff or two, and one pair or two of nunchuku, although I'm a bit sloppy in all 3 lol.. I'm a pacifist though.. Just love Martial Arts though.

For Martial Arts related injuries: Learn Taoist healing arts which includes moxibustion, accupressure, herbal medicines etc and throw in ice and stretching.

Very cool! Yah, I've only had a wee bit o' sword training myself, from a friend with 10 years experience. What's really fun is he'll throw random weapons into the mix; ie come at you with bo or two short swords or something like that... Or, you have to defend against sword empty handed, that's fun, as it incorporates the martial arts, too!

I'm a second-degree brown belt in Yoshukai, a red belt in Tae-Kwon-Do American, and a weapons expert, especially with sais and a bo (or two pieces of pipe and a broom handle). And for those of you wondering what those are, think Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles...Donatello used a bo, Raphael used sais

Most of the training is done without weapons, DaFishMan, and Troy, if I killed someone in self-defense, then I'd get off. I don't carry a handgun (personally, I wouldn't think of it), but if I did, I would certainly use it if I was attacked. And since I don't carry a weapon, if I was attacked, I can guarantee that my attacker would end up in the hospital, and I'm perfectly ok with that.

Its a little unsettling to me to find out that there is someone out there that encourages a group of people that its OK to permanently disable unarmed attackers with knives. OK so it is military fighting, but shouldnt that sort of fighting stay within the military? This sort of thing would be ok (in my book) at war, but it in public seems to be a little irrisponsible.

Why not just say "this is how to shoot a gun at a civilian who decided to attack you bare handed. Its ok to shoot your attacker here, here and here."

Do they teach you what to tell the police when you accidentally kill a person?

It actually hasn't happened yet where someone get killed using MCMAP fighting. A lot of our strikes are directed against joints (even in combat it's often better to maim and disable opponents so you can potentially take them as a POW). There have been many cases of people having to get artificial knee caps and pins and stuff in their elbows, but as long as the teqniques were used in self-defense the guy has always gotten off.

If some guys came after me, I would probably try to run. IF I couldn't run, sure, cheap shots all the way. In a life or death situation you go for the equalizers, the eyes, groin, pressure points, etcetera. However since I'm not in the military, I don't expect to ever have to be in a fight. I like martial arts classes where I learn to fight without using lethal blows. Where I learn to use a random stick picked up on the side of the road to disarm somebody or defend myself. Sure, I've been taught how to stab a guy with his own knife if he comes up behind me to kill me or something, but the odds of that happening are slim. I like sparring classes. I like knowing how to disarm a guy and bring him down. Bring him down, break his wrist/neck/elbows whatever, don't kill him, just get out of there. But that's just me. *shrugs* Not that I'm very skilled yet, I'm just beginning...
I enjoy martial arts for the mental aspect as much as anything. My instructor could teach us how to beat the snot out of everybody around us. Instead he teaches balance, peace, and control. (Having said that, knowing how to beat some big guy in three moves would be handy!)

They teach us in MCMAP fighting that the only unfair fight is one you lose and the use of 'cheap shots' and weapons when the other guy doesn't have one is highly encouraged.

Yes, but that is in actual military combat....any martial arts instructor who taught that outside of the marines would be a spat-upon outcast.

Despite martial arts training, I wouldn't hesitate to use a weapon to defend myself. Yes, I'm the guy that brings a knife to a fistfight (we get trained in knifefighting too). They teach us in MCMAP fighting that the only unfair fight is one you lose and the use of 'cheap shots' and weapons when the other guy doesn't have one is highly encouraged. Our instructor even highly recommended that we get a concealed carry license if our home states allow it.
