I have selected to run scan disk on an Xp computer that was upgraded from win2000 and when it starts up to do the test it says -

'Can not open volume for direct access'

What is happening with it?? It keeps trying to do it everytime it boots up and can't everytime????

If "it can't connect to the volume" it sounds like it may have been installed wrong, or there's a hardware problem. Did you "upgrade" to XP with an "upgrade cd"? There might be where your entire problem lies...you might have changed some system setting in win2k that prevents something in XP from working properly. If you reformatted the hard disk(s?) and installed a fresh copy of XP, you might just want to start over and install it again.

Another possible cause (but it's quite unlikely it would cause this type of a problem) is that the hard disks could be connected to the wrong IDE socket (you've got IDE right? it was still popular when win2k was around...). The hard disk cable should be on IDE1, and other drives on IDE2 (or 3, 4, 5 or how ever many you have). If this was switched from IDE1 to IDE2 right before the "upgrade to XP" it could possibly cause problems like this.

Good luck

OK thanks

I think I might just re-install XP from scratch.
