When you go into a fit of depression because you found a 200-gallon acrylic tank for only $200, which you could afford at the time, but didn't have anywhere big enough to put it!

When you can put a pair of fish in a small little tank (ie 10 gallons in the case of my brichardis) and they breed, followed by desperate re-arranging to get the fry into a big enough tank...

You can't stand the thought of people eating fish, but continue eating lamb and pork chops all the time...

You are a pre-vet student honestly considering majoring in fisheries and aquatic sciences. (fish vet, here I come!)

You are paranoid of the people there are in the world who would unknowingly put tiger barbs in a tank with angelfish... save the fish!

When you watch the temperature reports to make sure there isn't a big temperature drop for your bettas. Oh yeah, when you don't have to tune in for the weather updates/reports because you consult your bettas about whether or not there will be a storm that day.

yeah sunflwr, snow is a terrible thing, like i said before i,d love to just pack up and go but i like my lfs too much to leave so i put up with the snow ice and cold for my fish. i want to go some place that is H O T so i can do this.....:88)and not this....... california dreamin.

Hey Demosthenese -- what do your bettas do to indicate weather (other than spawn when there's a change in b.p.)?

I know I'm obsessed with fish when I start brainstorming how to keep my bettas warm...

and when I have dreams that my electric yellow cichlid finally spit out her brood and run to the fry tank to see if there are any little babies.

and the 55G is new.

I always get HUGE bubble nests before a storm. On several occasions, the sky has been clear, but I see that they've made a bubble nest. I go downstairs and report that there will be a storm that evening or night, and without fail, it comes.

Aquadude.... I know what you mean, I've lived in NH all my life and I'm still not used to the cold. It's already hitting 40 at night here, and we're lucky to see 55 in the day. There goes my hopes of having a betta.

*When you are more concerened about the woodstove making your tanks too hot than keeping yourself warm. (Just a note, the 30g is in the bedroom with the window open ALL day. )

I know I am obsessed with fish when I disobey my parents and had to sneek my new 29g tank in last May.

We already got frost too Harley and Aquadude!!! I had to scrape it off my windows the other morning, and I've been covering my plants at night. It will only get to 50 tonight though, whew. I hope this early cold spell isn't indicative of how winter is going to be this year...last year was murder -- several ice storms!

I want a wood stove!!!! (probably can't though, I'm in a mobile home..)

I love my woodstove, it gives off better heat than gas, and keeps my heaters in the tanks from going on overload... I'm still to scared to put a betta in my 1 gal tank, because we get the kitchen up to 90 with the stove.

Woke up this morning at 530am cos I needed to pee, but went to my fish tank first and thought "gee I need to do a water change today... now's as good a time as any!" and started to change the water. Had to stop to pee half way through cos I could hear the water noises! hee hee!

They talk to you. Who needs a therapist anyway? Mr. Fishie does the job real well. ^_^ Oh yeah... when you tell people to be nice to you or your fish will bite their head off. ^_^

Babel, don't worry, I've gone to the LFS just for cycle (well, that was the excuse anyways) and spent an hour at the store looking at the fish.

When you take a notepad to the LFS and write down every kind of fish they have and their prices... just for reference.

When you spend $80 a month at the pet store, and only $20 is for dog food.

When you bargain shop for EVERYTHING (I mean everything) but will buy top of the line just because your fish "need" it.

i always take exactly the amopunt i need.

Last time i took more than i needed (only went for BS and some cories) i came out with a 1.5 gallon bowl and a betta.

you spend your one day off a month cleaning tanks and apologizing to the fish about it being so messy for them.

you have dreams of starting a new breed of fish (guppy/neon tetra) but the specifications for it are cooler temps than normal with ultra high humidity, and the fly actually float through the air, not in the water....don't ask, I really can't explain why I was dreaming this one, same night I dreamed that my dad died...

u look at your tank and say "hmm a 75g is far too small for 5 discus mayb i should sell the tank and get a bigger one, like a 120G, yes that would house the discus comfotably" keeping the fish of course.

Someone offer you a 55g tank and u go off on left field ideas of wht your going to do with the tank. from a reef tank that then develops into a 120G reef tank with the 55g as a sump/refugium . im goming to get a reef tank no matter what. the dark side has corrupted me

What he doesn't realize is that I'm thinking of going to WalMart for that 55 I've had in site for quite some time...I figure I could have it all set up and running/cycling if I ever get another day off, and he'd never know it wasn't one of those in storage...the ones in storage are only 10's and hey I think I need a bigger one than that to help my lack of sanity...10 gallon might go to work soon....:%) Oh don't tell Johnny that the 55 is new....

lol ya i havent been to the lfs in the past two weeks i think it is im twitching like mad i told my mom we had to go this week or else.

This weekend's activity was a trip to the best freken LFS in my area (abot a half an hour drive though). And the funny part was that it was my dad's idea!

When you volunteer to write about the local (incredibly cool) fish store for the student-run magazine you're on.

When the cab fare to and from said trip comes to $50, and you still spend $25 in the store.

When people ask you if you "have fish" and you just laugh and laugh ....

You search all over the house and your car only to bring in $10 worth of change to buy just anything because your wife won't give you anymore money to spend on fish/supplies!

When you buy a fish labeled as a Gold Saum without researching it, head home and do some research, find it's also known as a Green Terror, decide that sounds very ominous...Then find out you've got a male and head to the fish store to get a female.

When you buy fish (juvenile) that will easily outgrow the tank your keeping them in at the moment, so you have a REASON to splurge out on a lavish new tank, rather than an the old EXCUSES.
When you got to the library at school and instead of researching on the computers/internet your caught drawing fish on Paint, and having people staring over your shoulder... (Most of which are monster fish that don't exist anyway,)

Ha! I get that way. I had someone explain to me how they kept a Betta in vase and "let it" eat the stem of the plant that was kept in there. Boy, did I unload... Anytime I hear about people purchasing fish or "getting into the hobby", I am right over giving advice...

When you're flipping through next years wilderness calander (by a world acclaimed photographer) and you come accross a photo of cliffs with nice big black smooth rocks at the bottom of it and your first thought is how nice they would look in a fish tank and wonder if there is any way to go and get some, and after that if there would be any small enough to fit in any of the tanks that I have, I mean there is always the olympic sized pond I will have in my garden once I have a house.

MangoR34, ok, I think you're obsessed, then again, the staff at the Local Petsmart, know me by name. 3 times a week I take a "stroll" to check out their "stock". Usually go in, mingle, and place "special" orders for plants and fish (well knowing all my tanks are brimming at capacity).

...you find yourself eyeing smaller and smaller aquariums, when you used to ogle 240s.

...you see a single marine planted and commit yourself to trying it.

...you're willing to forgo fish in any setup with high enough light to play with.

...you rant almost as much about strip lights as about goldfish bowls or world hunger.

...your town pride stems purely from the fact that a well-known power compact seller runs out of said town. And that you don't have to pay shipping.

...you judge stores on their plant stocks ... even non-pet stores.

...you subscribed to a magazine from "across the pond" just because of a moderatly good plant column. (Good thing the rest of Practical Fishkeeping is top-notch!)

LittleMouseling, those sound all too familiar. My mom tells me my baby brichardis are as big as their parents were when I got them. I can't wait to see them (and my synodontis cats, and my barbs, and the goldfish in the pond assuming they'll come out...)

OK how bout...when mates come over and check out the fish tanks...and while they're not looking you inconspicuosly use your shirt to wipe off the water change stains from earlier that morning. Even when theres a towl at arms reach.
Or when you lose a fish and have a burial. With a minutes silence out of respect.

you dream that you are going to get a new fish that you are pretty certain doesnt actually exist but you want to make sure, but then you can't remember the name of it, grrrr. It was such a cool fish too, it got to about 4 foot long, lived in rivers, it was called a river d___ and ate in a similar way to a baleen whale, it would take in big mouthfuls of water and then squooshes the water out through vents in the bottom of his mouth and is left with the food. And I was going to have 3 of theese. Now how cool would that have been?

(2) You think about tanks you have saw and try to figure ways to improve them.

(3) Restocking tanks over and over again until you can almost see it in front of you.

(4) Realizing you are a Fish-a-holic and need help.

Wow... I hardly realized I posted this six months ago! Pretty crazy.

You have another "fishy nightmare" and have to spend time convincing yourself that the Diamond Tetras are going to be fine because while the fish in the nightmare were shiny and silver, they were obviously not Diamond Tetras....

When you get plants in the mail (@the office) and can't wait to open the box so you do...right there....getting water all over the mixer and keyboard ....then promply set up a Water Change bucket with light and the plant cause you just don't have the time to put them in the tank right then....but still wanna see them....

when u go to the lfs just to look at there fish(not buy just look)....everyday(i did that for a week then stopped when my grades dropped below a B)

You are almost ecstatic about having a reason to get a new tank that's even larger. Even if it means that you had to clean 20 gallons of fishy water from the living room floor.

Did ya'll know that in times of panic, you can keep your fish in a plastic storage bucket. And I know it wasn't the right thing to do, but the tank was empty, and a net wouldn't work, but my hands did quite well at catching those goldfish and pleco. (Johnathan Patrick; pleco; was quite irate by this move, but was happy to be back in the water.)

hmm....when u think more about fish than school work at school. when u move ur fish to ur new tank to make room in the old so it will be not as closed to overstocked and be able to add more cory's to have a complete school because u didnt know they needed 6 hmm....sounds like me [end of rant] o and u are worried about other peoples fish and are constantly talking about fish to ur friend during school this sounds A LOT like me
