My youngest daughter lives in TN and has finally found her niche in the employment world. Got her picture in the local paper with her dog Sally.

She is the firewoman....not the clown, or the beagle. Though she has used granddaughter and I as training aides for her beagle. Nothing like hiding in a bunch of weeds...hoping there are no snakes around...to make a trip to visit them memorial.

Was this the first dog she trained for that sort of thing?

I love dogs and training them though mine is geared toward bird hunting.

This is the first time she has delibertly trained a dog in search and rescue. Her first pug, was inadvertantly trained to trail when she would play hide and go seek with him. It is a hoot to see a pug with its nose to the ground following a scent trail. She has trained dogs in junior showmanship, conformation, and obedience. Sally is her first search and rescue dog, but I doubt she will be the last..she is training Marcie in search and rescue also, and trying to train Schroeder to be a cadaver dog. But if a dog doesn't like the scent of cadavers, it is usually a no go.

When I train I use wings of the birds we will be hunting. So where do you get the cadavers or pieces thereof to train with?

I'm just full of obscure questions, Mike

Tiger9, she is also married. I don't think she is planning on getting divorced anytime soon.

Mike, she has a friend who is a nurse in an er room and she will bring her bloody bandaids, skin from burn victims, etc. and used sanitary supplies from someone she knows the dog will not have to trail. This is kept in an air tight container with a tennis ball suspended in a net over it so it absorbs the ordor. The difference in smell between a live and dead person is considerable and changes shortly after birth. Dogs you want to train for cadaver dogs get to play with the smelly tennis ball as the beginning part of their training. Some dogs will not have anything to do with a cadaver ball, and cannot be trained. Cadaver dogs are only used when suficient time has passed or they have reason to believe that they are searching for a corpse.

Well, a smelly tennis ball is alot better than what I imagined. I won't even go into that. Being a butcher and a hunter I'm not paticularly squeamish but wondering how to train a cadaver dog put a few wrinkles in my brow.

The dog trainer lives in an apartment above the county morgue.
