I would say the best thing to have is experience... not many people at pet stores say "just a moment let me get my handy book and look up the answer for you". Answers differ depending on situations. You should know your cycle, max sizes of the fish in the store (and consider reasonable stocking levels for various size tanks), basic medications, and what plants can do (oxygenate, absorb nitrites, etc)... if you don't know the answer, it's best to consult another person who works there who is very much involved with fish. Perhaps I'm lucky in that I got a job at a pet store where there is someone who is really knowledgeable... but anyway, I can't say there is a book to study that will help you. Customers tend to ask the kind of questions you don't find the answers to in books.

i wasnt going to have the book with me on hand. i would read it in my spare time.

if i went to a lfs and asked a question and the employee pulled out a book. i wouldnt think he knew nothing about fish and i would move on to the next employee.

the reason i wanted a book is so i could study fish and their scientific names so i would be more helpful and dependable.

personaly i like a person who knows what their talking about at the lfs and i want to be like that.

there must be a book that could help me up my fish knowledge.

I was told that this was a good book for plants and have ordered it. Haven't received it yet, but I'll let you know if it's any good when I do. There was a thread not too long ago asking a similar question... I forget what books were suggested, but you may want to peek into the previous threads. I think one was asking about a fish encyclopedia...
