Can anyone do me a favour?

I've acquired a Rice Cooker, but no instructions and the controls are all in chinese. Can anyone look at the following pics and tell me what the settings are?

Cheers

Well, I'm no expert in Chinese, I'll tell you that right off... but I do know how to count to 3 in Korean

The first pic appears to be the safety/fire hazard label...

In the 2nd pic-

If you haven't already guessed, the symbols on the dial probably mean Off... 1, and then the rest of the numbers (probably a timer?)...

With the 50-60Hz thing, set that to whatever frequency your AC outlet is at... not sure what it is in the UK... It's 60Hz here, I think it's 50Hz in Aus....

No idea on the 3rd pic...

Have fun

Yeah - I can't figure out how you turn it on. Wondering what the characters above the lights at the top mean.

The model is the SA-C550,

http://www.tiger-corporation.cn/product/ricecooker/lineup.html

About 3/4 of the way down this page, it's listed, but I can't understand whether there are instructions available on the website for that model.

For the picture on the dial... The first button is labeled "Timer" (which, for some reason, is in Japanese...), the second button is labeled "Cook Rice", and the third button is labeled "Maintain Heat", or basically to keep it warm. At the place where there's a character where you'd think it would say 1 instead, it says "to Enter", though I'm not really sure why. The dial is pointed at something that says "to cut", which is actually kind of weird to see on a rice cooker. My rice cooker at home doesn't have a feature like that.

Sorry, my Chinese sucks, so I couldn't even dare to read the mess on the back.

Well my chinese skills have gone to hell since I haven't lived there in years. Anyhow in my few years there it never went much beyond an ability to chat up women

One thing I can tell you for sure it ain't Chinese it's Japanese. Japanese use a mixture of chinese chracters and their own unique japanese characters. That's definately Japanese.

Living in Asia I had to learn how to use a rice cooker or I'd have died of starvation long ago They are very easy. I'm not familiar with the dials, but I'm assuming it refers to the number of cups of rice you are cooking. The important one is the rectangular one below the dial. When ready to cook, plug into mains and just press that one down, when the rice is cooked it will automatically pop up and go into "keep warm" mode. Got to remember here in Asia a rice cooker is somthing that's on almost 24/7 as rice is eaten for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Most folks always have a batch of warm rice on the go.

I assume you know how to prepare the rice ? By the way it's a bugger to clean the removable rice bowl/container, always rice stuck to the sides and bottom. Fill it with warm water and washing up liquid and let soak for a while !

Wouldn't I make somebody a lovely housewife

Like Bensaf said, it's Japanese,

The top are:
Time, Warm, Boiling

The other two are "beginning/start in this case..." and timer.

I'm guessing you turn the knob to beginning or one of those numbers and press the button/level, then wait for the buttons to light up from boiling, to warm. Time probably doesnt have anything to do with it unless your doing a timed cook, like boiling chicken or something in there (yes, you can boil chicken in there)

It doesn't really look like there's any Japanese at all; there isn't any Hiragana or Katakana other than "Taimaa". But whatever, I'll resign my opinion since I'm only at an intermediate introductory level...

I guess I have to study harder.

the guy i got it off said that he had it left by his Chinese flatmate, so I just assumed it was Chinese.

Guess I'll just have to fiddle around with it until I figure it out. Cheers for the help

Bensaf - I tried just flicking the switch down, my bf's one is that simple. This one isnt!

Just not sure what to set the time to to get the rice to cook. It didnt seem to do much last time I tried. I dont think it's to do with how many cups of rice, cos it's no way a 10 cup cooker, it's only about 1. something litres

Yeah - doing the rice is no problem. I love Japanese and SE Asian food, and since my tummy had another major wobble, it's the only food that I really like I can safely eat When I start earning money again, I might replace this cooker with the really nice Tefal one, which has adapters for steaming and slow cooking (crockpot), all things I love!

Luvin' rice. Good for the tum-tums that rebel against wheat.

I am Aust born with Italian heritage so miss my pasta. I make the sauces I used to eat on pasta and have them on rice instead. It works really well and then I have pasta for a treat or at family gatherings. Makes it more special.

A good itialian style one is to make a red sauce (homemade or jar) and add capers and green olives (slice up stuffed olives) and a touch of chilli. Put the sauce on the rice and add a tim of tuna. Top with parmesan/reggiano/romano cheese and cracked pepper.

Alternative; you can serve steamed veggies (broccoli, beans, zucchini) on a bed of rice and add a dob of pesto and parmesan/reggiano/romano cheese (omit cheese for vegans). That is pretty good too.

Anyway, point is that rice can be used Mediteranean cooking as well as Asian style cooking. Although my personal Asian fave is omlette with chinese veggies/shallots on a bed of rice topped with chili sauce or oyster sauce. So nutitious and my body just says "thank you"!

I have that one a lot.

Man do I like food!!!!!

Japanese rice. Makes me think of something I have seen in the Asian grocery store.

In the section where they have the Japanese items there are little bottles of rice seasonings. It has sesame seeds and little bitty bits of seaweed etc. Looks great. I am going to get one and give it a go.

I love Japanese and SE Asian food

Well you'd like it over here Tiny When I first arrived in Asia about 10 years ago I was the real steak and chips guy, had to change that real quick

Asian food is good, although it took a while to realise the real stuff is way way different to what you get in a Asian restaurant in the west. The chinese eat pretty much anything that won't poison you. I used to pass back alley places outside my apartment in Beijing that badgers and all sorts in cages ready to put in the pot Some was just yukky most was delicious, a few were surprising - who knew fried cricket on a stick could be such a tasty snack.

My Indonesian wife has learned to cook a mean steak and 2 veg, but I hardly bother anymore, the Indonesian dishes are for nicer. Gourami stuffed with spices and wrapped in banana leaf and steamed is damn near about the best thing you'll ever taste.

Thai food is about the best there is bar none. A spicy mango salad would raise the dead

Now you're gonna get us talking Bensaf! MMM Pad Thai, Pad Se-Ew, Kao Na Ped, oh boy.

Not only that, but Thai desserts are a killer, like the coconut sticky black and white rice.

Cheers Wish. For me, it's not gluten though, it's lactose and yeast. Sets my tummy right off into a state. So pasta = but pesto =

I remember that about China, Ben. I was a vegetarian when I went, so it was all a bit interesting finding stuff I could eat. But it was an amazing country, though on balance, I'd have to say I preferred Pakistan.

Jimmy..... gold star. You rock.

Bonus points for firing up the rice cooker every day at your house. Wish I could do that but with one person you don't get hot fresh rice EVERY day.... quanitities needed in a rice cooker more than one meal's worth for me. Lucky you

Yeah sure you can microwave it. That's what I do when I bring it for my lunch. But isn't it just a delight straight from the cooker?

Yo ! You got the translation from JQW - ho yieh, JQW - now get this !
Note the 50Hz - some other post said it's 50/60 Hz - not so - UK uses 50 Hz only. About that 15amps - just use it in the normal UK 13 3-pin amp power socket - 15 amps dates it to prehistoric times - probably why you got it free !

How to use it ? If you haven't electrocuted yourself yet ! It's best to wash the rice first - in another bowl or pot will do - under running water/tap - for a few minutes. Take out any stones, weevils, black bits - where DO you buy your rice ? If it's not sticky rice (glutenous) you use, measure out 1 or 2 or 3 cups of the now soggy rice and put in the container. (If it IS sticky rice, you're on your own.) Add water until,it's about a half to one top thumb joint above the rice. Stick your thumb in and check it. Got that ? If not - read again !

Put the container in the cooker - nothing works if you don't do that, dummy - and cover with the lid. Now comes the hard bit - set the knob to no 7 - and press down the bottom button which is a switch. It should click and stay down. Lights come on and cooking starts. When rice is properly cooked, the bottom switch will pop up and the Warm light stays on. Automatically ! Now remove lid - watch out for gush of hot steam in your face - and ladle rice onto your plate or into your rice bowl or onto your banana leaf (fish head curry anyone ??!! ) - or whatever is your choice of utensil. Replace lid - repeat - replace the lid. This thing keeps rice warm automatically. Now eat !

When finished eating, if you want to keep leftover rice, do as the nice Chinese man Jimmy said. Don't leave it in the cooker for hours - it will turn to concrete - maybe a good idea too ! Then you can go out and buy a new cooker with instructions in English.

Now - trouble shooting. Say after me - It's easy ! If rice turns out soggy - you used too much water (thumb too big ? ) or you used sticky rice, dummy ! If rice turns out crunchy, nutty, hard - waddaya think huh ? Experiment a bit at first. Once you have everything working hunkydory (is that a kind of fish ? ), let us know so we can all breath easy - and the moderators can terminate this thread forever by casting it into "The Abyss". Maybe your old old rice cooker should be consigned to the deep as well ? MalcolmL
