why do some cars have gas caps on the driver side, while others have them on the passenger side? a few still have them behind the license plate.

i own three vehicles, and all have gas caps placed in the above mentioned paragraph.

random placement? are vehicles assembled in foreign countries e to fuel holes placed in spots opposite of "american" made cars.

another thing that makes you go hmmmmm?

Are you saying new cars still have gas caps behind the license plate?

Last time I've seen that 'feature' was like a 84 Caprice

Depends on the manufacturer...

A lot of german cars here in the US - BMW, MB, VW, Audi, Porsche - have their gas caps on the passenger side (relative to our left-hand drive).

Most of the domestic brands and Japanese makes have their gas caps on the driver's side.

I think Jaguar puts their gas cap on the passenger side. Same with Volvo. I can't really picture any others right now.

One explanation I can think of is that when cars are adapted from right-hand drive to left-hand drive, the position of the gas cap isn't moved... but that's just a guess.

the license plate one is an 85 cutless p^&&#&- never mind.

i manage a very busy pizza place, and most of my 20+ delivery drivers have newer cars. gas cap placement seems to be random, regardless of manufacture.

this was just a question to spur interest in something different.

I have a 98 Ford Ranger and the placement is on the driver's side...Leslie has a 2000 (?) Ford Taurus and it's on the passenger side...so it isn't age, or maker...though my toyota was on the left, and my dodge was on the right...things that make us go hmmmmmmmmmm.....

Jags are usually on the top, passenger-side.

On my 96 Ford Taurus, it's on the passenger side. And it's annoying as hell.

This would make sense... except in Germany and the US the driver sits on the left, and in Japan the driver sits on the right. So in fact the Japanese cars have their gas tank on the original passenger's side. :%)
