Depression sucks doesn't it.

My wife had a blood clot from taking the oral contraceptive and ended up in what the medical profession call a vegetative state. I started on Prozac september 97, came off it after 18 months, hit rock bottom again, then started again on a generic brand, Fluoxitide. Have been on it since, no side effects. Have a review every 6 months with the GP and get a new prescription. Apparently I will be on it for the forseeable future...

All the best Theresa

Cipramil here

Technically its to help clear my brainfog, but it does have the added benefit of evening out my moods. I have tried coming off it twice... not a wise move on my part. Not only could i not think in a straight line, but i was flying off the handle at the smallest things, and to make things worse, i was VERY aware that i was overreacting, so i kept apologising then carying on with my rant
My specialist for the CFS says that studies have shown that these type of tablets can improve sleeping patterns and energy levels, and they do seem to, for me at least. I am not sure of there effect on someone with a more normal body.

I have seen CBT guys. I didn't qualify for medication, i barely qualified for needing more sessions. For my problems, the CBT councellor was ideal. Because i can analyse my behaviour, often when it is occurring, all I needed was the tools to either stop myself, or to approach it differently.

My brother is also on ADs, but a different type/family to mine. He tried he newer ones, and my mother and i stayed up with him til 4am while his little body convulsed on the loungeroom floor. It was a very rare reaction, and after a few phonecalls and being shunted around the hospital, we found they could do nothing for him but wait until it wore off. So we stayed there with him in the loungeroom holding his legs so they didn't contract so far. He was in absolute agony poor baby.
So now, he is on the older style, and they are working wonderfully for him. I cannot remember what he was diagnosed with, but after 7+ years of bullying, it was something along the lines of social phobia.
CBT didn't work for him. He is seeing a youth councellor.

I know its a rough road Theresa, its a reasonably new field, with no specific test to show you are deficient in any chemicals etc etc. But there should be a type of drug for you. If your family doctor doesn't know, see a specialist. The first type i was on gave my stomach pains and raing headaches (Aropax). I am glad i decided to try a different type.

Go to www.radiantrecovery.com. Might help. It has to do with using food to stabalize your brain chemistry. My wife is alot happier now.

Good luck, Mike

Thanks for the replies.

Guppylove, I tried going off meds about 6 months ago. It was a debate of whether I felt worse without them or with the side effects.

The doctor that diagnosed me is a general practitioner, I guess I should look into a referral for a psychiatrist.

Therese, it sucks hey? Don't I know it...

Mine recently got so bad I had to take a month off work, and when you live with your boyfriend in a $1200 a month apartment, you don't wanna do that unless you really have to

I've been on antidepressants a long long time (since I was 12), and I do agree with you that it takes a while to find the right prescription for you, but when you do, stick with it as long as you have to!

Severe depression, or BiPolar, is an ILLNESS, and going off the meds before you're ready (if you're ever ready) will only make it worse. You probably already know that from experience

I find it ironic sometimes how people have such a negative attitude towards meds sometimes, but have no problem with the herbals... What's the difference? In my experience the meds don't change who I am one bit, they just stop the overwhelming despair that I used to feel every minute from consuming me... And that's a good thing

I'm currently on Effexor, which is tiding me over until I can get into to see the Psychiatrist again. The last time I saw him I was 16, and things have changed a bit since then...

an interesting site to visit about meds is:

awww *hugs* Theresa_M, I know we've got a few of them, hopefully they'lll have the time to post here or PM you ect....

I'd really work hard on getting into talk therapy and the like, sure meds may work, but IMO they're not a long term/ final answer type deal (did that make any sense ).... My understanding of bipolar dissorder is that people like you (and me) live exactly the worst kind of life for it...one that adds stress from working nights, added with caffiene that gives it a few hands up.
Can't say I know what you're going thru but I can offer you a few vitamen B's (stress I know if I havent' taken mine >.&lt and a steaming hot cupa melafix ....watch the tank for a bit and do not, I repeat, do not get up to scrub any bit of algae, or move a plant, or do a water change, or pick out a fallen leaf....just W-A-T-C-H the shishies for 15 minutes.
