"Bettas like small spaces, it makes them feel more comfortable"

I thought that was true. I don't mean those little cups, but I thought a betta would prefer something like a 5 gallon to a 50 gallon.

I've refused to sell many fish to customers. Once I had to tell my manager to tell a customer that they simply cannot add 6 tinfoil barbs to a 10 gallon aquarium.

Manager? You should take over hiring and training. You sound like you should start by educating the manager a bit. You are doing a good job!

I often get "Why don't you keep colorful fish?"

Also the ever-amusing: "Why are there shells in that tank?" (said by people who've heard me talking about shelldwellers all too often, in their opinions ... I'm always impressed by the number of people who hear shelldwelling cichlids and despite understanding both words still think I'm talking about oysters or something similarly immobile).

Dumb things said by people without fish, or in this case said by people WITH fish...

A direct quote from chat today from a regular...

"well...I suppose you could flush them, or see if they will be eaten? My mollies' fry dont ever survive long in my tank"

Flush them? Poor babies!

Apparently gas bubble disease sounds really funny to people who don't keep fish or something. The name earned some snickers in bio class. I was horrified since I actually knew what it was.

Jorge you forgot these two:

customer: (looking at a tank full of piranha that is CLEARLY labeled PRIANHA) "Are these piranha?"

customer: (looking at a FW display tank with stingrays and assorted cichlids) "Is this a freshwater tank?"
Ok, you have to give them that one. Not many people know that there are FW rays.
Jorge: "Yes, actually it is."
C: (points to ray) "So that is a freshwater fish."
J: "Yes, that's right."
C: (points to a cichlid in the same tank) "That one is too?"

:%)

Isn't 'that tank sure looks empty, you need to fill it up' common?

I get that one a lot too. Just a couple days ago with my sister's friend:

Friend: "Hey, how come this tank is so empty?"
Me: "Look on the gravel."
Friend: "Ew! Why do you have all those scavenger fish?! You only need one."
Me:

I'm not your neighbor, you Bakersfield trash.

A common one I would get at work would be "why can't I keep two of these guys (bettas) together? they won't really fight to the death, will they?"

I get this often with my 75g. Current stock is a blue acara, school of Odessa barbs, dojo, plec, 2 angels, severum, 2 L. dorsigera, and a blue flash (similar in size & shape to a firemouth). When I comment that many of these fish will grow to 8-10"+ replies are 'well that's ok, they'll learn to adjust' or 'don't worry about it, when they get larger just get rid of some ' ]:|

There are some complete twonks on this planet, aren't there?

Indeed!!

Heres a few I hate and hear all the time:
"Clown Loaches only ever grow to like 5 inches"
"You could easily add a group of Clown Loaches to your 90, how about 8?"
"What do you mean they get that size? That must only be in the wild, fish in captivity grow only to match their environment"
"Bettas like small spaces, it makes them feel more comfortable"

This is my fave of all time, my new neighbor at the house im moving into:
"Yes, I have 20 Goldfish in my tank...No, its only a 55 gallon....yes they are all about 5 inches, thats how big goldfish get, 5 inches...What do you mean cycle my tank? No, I bought it yesterday....yeah and the fish too....Oh,
I cant remember what they are called....they arent koi....they are...."Comets?" yeah, comets thats it....
Water conditioner? Whats that? Oh no, I dont clean my tank often, I bought a pleco to do it...."
That was last friday ]:|

"Can those live in a bowl with my goldfish?"

Well, my post won't let me edit at all and I put the wrong link up there. I meant to show the corner filter I was speaking about for quarantine:

[link=http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=3918&Ntt=corner%20filter&Ntk=All&Ntx=mode+matchallpartial&Np=1&N=2004&Nty=1]http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=3918&Ntt=corner%20filter&Ntk=All&Ntx=mode+matchallpartial&Np=1&N=2004&Nty=1" style="COLOR: #C000C0[/link]

I have bunches of these and they are easy to sterilize when done and easy to swap media around as needed. As I mentioned above, you get a pretty well cycled tank by putting seeded gravel below the activated carbon. I dribble in some bacterial starter right into the filter floss. In fact, the floss can be seeded by putting it right into the filters flow on an established tank for a week or two.

Hey everyone! I just got a "fill-in the blank fish"...so, what do I feed it

3 days later

Hey guys, really - there's something wrong with this fish - he won't eat the flakes

10 days later

R.I.P. "fill-in the blank fish" - he must have really been sick when I got him.

Why don't people research a species FIRST, then buy. I'm tired of hearing something was on sale. Poor excuse to not have the right size tank or the right kind of food available.
[hr width='40%']
I can't afford a 10 gallon quarantine tank
as he/she stocks a 55 gallon tank.

- 10 new harlequin rasboras added to stock: $24.00
- Ich Med when entire tank breaks out: 7.50
- Melafix & Pimafix to prevent infection
from ich bites: $15.00
- Fungus Clear when that doesn't work
100 pk since 5 tabs per treatment: $24.00

- Cost to replace dead fish: $45.00

- Quarantine Tank: Priceless

I'm amazed at the fact that someone has 25-30 bucks for fish, but not for a quarantine setup.

Here are some timelines from date of netting/transport:

- Body Fungus/Mouth Fungus (Columnaris): up to 72 hours.
- Septicemia, aeromonas, pseudomonas inf.: up to 10 days
- Certain parasites for aquarium fish: up to 3 weeks
- Certain parasite - wild caught: weeks - months

Quarantine setup:

- 10 gallon tank: $14.00
- Filtration (very simple) $11.00
- Check Valve $ 2.00
- 50w heater (visitherm): $13.00
- 10 gallon canopy: $11.00

Cheaper would be a rubbermaid bin from the dollar store with a lid, leaving corner filter, heater and check valve.

What kind of filter? A corner filter which is great for quarantine/hospital. It runs on an airpump and you can put a handful of seeded gravel in the bottom, followed by activated carbon when not medicating, then filter floss.

When medicated dump the activated carbon and put a fresh handful of seeded gravel in from a good tank.
