most ferrets if not all in stores have their scent glands removed and are also neutered.

With delayed neutering/spaying, controlled photoperiods, lower temperatures, and naturalistic diets, ferrets can easily live 8-14 years....the shorter lifespans have a lot to do with commercial foods, long photoperiods, early altering, and being kept at temps that are typically 8ºC-15ºC warmer than what they would naturally be exposed to.

You are right...their life span is WAAAAAAAY too short.

If it isn't their short life span that ruins it, it can be the horrendous diseases many of them develop as well OR suffer from neglect from inexperienced owners.

One of our groups of ferrets we took in...well, we are their 5th AND final owner!

hmmm, somehow i make it a point never to smell too close to my pets tails

and it is too bad that they don't live longer. they would be the best pet in the whole world if they lived as long as a cat or dog....

they smell... thick, somewhat fruity....

Great pic!

We have 4 ferrets...all rescues. We had 7 total...3 groups taken in & eventually socialized together. The sad time comes when they pass away.

Call me strange, but I LOVE their scent! Could that be why I've always favored musk colognes???

kitten -

although ferrets look like they're fighting, they're actually playing.

when they play, they play hard, and when they sleep, they sleep hard. I've known some ferrets to be so far deep in sleep they don't respond to being picked up or whatever they've been mistaken as dead (hence the term, 'sleeping not dead'). They've got very tough skin, so they don't get injured that much.

speaking of baths, one of mine needs one today - she knocked over a cup of gatorade yesterday and took a bath in it

Ferrets can have very little odour, when kept in a cage that is cleaned daily, bedding washed weekly, litterbox cleeaned daily or twice daily, and on high-quality food (and no fish or fish meal). Most people visiting me are surprised to find that I have even one ferret, much less multiple ferrets, as their odour is negligible.

By the by...great fret, Meriadoc!

Well, woo! for that, Toirtis. I don't believe in declawing cats, either. I wouldn't object to adopting one that was already declawed, but I certainly wouldn't put a cat through that. ...I spend far too much time wishing I had claws of my own to rob a cat of hers!

As for ferrets... they're cute, but the only ones I've seen personally (in an LCPS) were constantly fighting and rank smelling. Of course, this could just be the care they receive, as I'm not convinced that even half of the people who work there know what on EARTH they're doing.

The picture's great, by the way. I love the depth of focus and the B&W. He's certainly a cutie!

Declawing a cat still involves cutting off the last joint of the toe (to which the claw is attached), not too dissimilar to removing the last joint of a finger. The procedure is becoming illegal in a growing number of places.

Our cat was spayed and declawed at the same time, both under anesthesia. Apparently they used a new less invasive laser technique for it, don't know much about it though.

Having the scent grands removed does not really cut down on their day-to-day odour, so much as prevent them from spraying (something they do only when under extreme duress, so not common in a pet, except when severely startled). However, having the scent glands removed is quite uninjurious, unlike having a cat declawed.

i wouldn't say they *need* so much attention as they *require* attention. you will have to "ferret proof" your house and they will *still* find ways to get into stuff they shouldn't. not to mention dragging your shoes into odd places, hiding any trinkets they find, and generally causing mischief wherever they happen to be at the moment

hmmm...are they more social like dogs are...ie need plenty of attention or are they more like cats and can do just fine on their own?

I've never had a cat declawed...I'd never have an operation done on a ferret either...although I'm sure they use anesthisa unlike when they rip cat claws out .

they don't smell any worse than a cat. the only thing is they won't always go in the litter box, even if they've been trained to ]

Naa it's not that bad. It is def a unique smell tho.

You can always have their scent glands removed. It's a common procedure and isn't very expensive I understand.
