Well, seeing as how the inital question was about who hunts or fishes and not about the moral and ethical properties of each, I think we are getting slightly off topic.

That being said, I am an avid fisherman and the only hunting I do is varmint hunting.

Whos to say that any other animals actually think?

Untill we become psychic and can communicate telepathically with other animals we will never actually know, for all we know what we interpret as thinking could simply be a vast complex series of basic instinct reactions.

Thank you, Cory Addict. That is my point exactly.

And, before I go get another soda, I will just say one thing/paragraph.

Fishing is okay, providing you finish it off humanely and eat it. However, if you just throw it back in, or a doing it to get a cheap trophy, that is what's annoying me. You might say, "Hey, I have every right to." No you don't. Nobody has the right to kill any living, breathing, thinking creature for fun, unless you need it to survive (i.e. rabbits), it poses a potential threat to you (i.e. bears), or somebody has put a gun to your head and will kill you if you don't do it.Notice I said "thinking creatures." This includes birds, fish, and higher mammals. Tjis does not include plants, insects, or rodents. Those of you out there who fish for sport and see nothing wrong, lemme tell you a story:

One day, during the 1940's, two bored teenagers where sitting around in Germany. They saw a homeless cat, and threw a rock at it. However, they didn't see the 6ft. SS soldier who came around the corner. He saw what they did, and informed them about ehy it is wrong to be cruel to animals. See, even the most evil people who walked the earth have a sense of animal rights.

The moral of the story is, regardless of your history or bakcground, harming or attempting to harm an animal for no real reason is wrong.

*bows "Thank you, thank you. I'm here till my death!"

Good call greenmonkey. I don't let my fish swallow it. I set the hook before they have a chance most of the time.

Cory addict, I think this is where British and American fishing differs.

Popular target species in america have large mouths and are quick to swallow the hook, however in britain a lot of the target species are more "grazers" and thus do not swallow it quickly and thus 99% of the time get hooked through the lip.

Almost every fish I have caught has been hooked through the lip, almost every fish I have seen anyone else catch has been hooked through the lip.

Okay, let's get one thing straight.

I know that is a ridiculous percentege. I was not going for scientific accuracy, but rather the point that hooking a fish does indeed injure it and and they do frequently die.

And Bonny, last time I checked, fish don't get hooked by the lip. Unless of course you are talking about the bait fish, which is put on the hook by its lip. The fish that you are trying to catch try to swallow the hook, therefore it gets lodged in their throat or gills. These injuries are extremely painful to the fish and make it difficult for the fish to eat again.

To make things worse, many fishermen who catch and release don't care about the fish at all. They are simply doing it because for example there are kids around who want the fish to "live and be free" or it against the law to keep the fish. People like this do not remove the hook properly. They either just cut the line and release the fish with the hook still in the fish's throat/gills, or they yank it out, along with whatever chunks of flesh get caught on it.

These fish are not in captivity, so they do not have loving owners that will medicate and care for them until they are better them. The wounds leave the fish severely susceptible to disease, which is the most common way for catch and release fish to die. Another danger they face predators, because the blood from the wounds attracts many other animals who will pick at the wound or simply eat the whole fish.

I fish and hunt. I'm not going to write an essay explicating the numerous reasons why I believe hunting and fishing aren't wrong, they've already been described enough. Instead, if you disagree with me plucking a blissful fish out of the water or shooting a 250 pound sow rooting around a mud pit, then I just won't invite you on my hunting and fishing trips and you won't have to watch.

Cory Addict if someone hoocked you through the lip then pulled you with it for a bit, you may not enjoy it but I highly doubt that you would die afterwards.

If a fish is properly treated (landed properly with knotless nets, handled with a wet towel, quickly unhooked and released ASAP) then it actually stands a very good chance of survivial.

I occasionally go fishing but I barely ever catch anything and mainly do it for the relaxation.
