Cory How I wish that is what our big rats look like, I've always heard them referred to as nutra's but maybe they aren't...Those look so sweet and loving, compared to the ones i've seenI honestly got chased out of a section of one of our water plants one night by one, and I was in a truck...took me a bit to gain control and go back there again...still won't walk the perimeter because of them...

Now with the thought of freeze dried bobcat urine, that might just work. We only had rat problems when our mating set of bobcats weren't seen for sometime. Once we started spotting the bobcats again the sightings of rats did go down...didn't think of the urine thing...but hey good idea!!! Any hunting type place would probably carry it

Muskrats are more related to rats, mice... same family... beavers are in their own family.

Muskrats are completely different animals from nutria and are native. They are more related to beavers I believe, but I'll have to double-check that.

The 20-30 pound "rats" are actually Nutria, a South American rodent that's introduced in many tropical and subtropical places around the globe. And they actually aren't very closely related to rats or mice at all; they are relatives of capybaras and pacas (other large South American rodents).

I think they are quite cute really, and I like to hand feed them whenever I go to Louisiana.

Some garden centers and websites sell freeze dried bobcat urine

Making the rats think there is a preditor(sp?) might work.

Good luck

at my dads work in the city (NYC) we have a real rat problem. these are NYC rats. the real deal! there are becomeing a problem because they as pooping all over the linin and destroying the machines. the rats some are about 1 foot each. no joke. rat posion hasn't done a thing. it might have even made them bigger. we are running out of things to do. the next step is to get a bb gun and start killing some. my dad has even tried getting stray NYC cats but they didn't get any, they were scared. i was thinking about getting maybe a really large rat eatting snake and letting it go or something like that. what else is left to do.

the high pitch won't phase those here. How big of a rat are we talking about?

A 12 gauge will take care of them here, along with a 22 if you're lucky...still say a tazer, or shot gun...I'm talking rats of about 20-30 lbs...so if ya'll's are bigger i'm scared...at least they are nicer...Heidi

has anyone ever tried one of those things that make a high frequency noise? I doubt they would work. I was just wondering if anyone has ever used one.

well some rats are resistant to near nuclear energy, so if u have a tiny atom bomb, you could nuke the little buggars, but the neighbors would hate u, so I suggest a shotgun.

You've identified a problem right there - if the workers leave food around, of course the rats will come looking for it.

This sounds like a job for professional pest controllers. I don't know about over there, but here the professionals are licensed to use much stronger types of poison than you can buy over the counter. When the rats have become resisten to the over-the-counter poisons the professionals need to move in and do it properly.

Good luck... those rats sound scary!

yea a snake might not be the best. the rats wait until the workers leave and that's when my dad really see the bigger ones come out. after closing he sometimes see some of them coming out of the walls. they hear they machines go off and then they come. there is no way of finding where they come from, maybe the swerer.idk posion really isn't good b/c they die in the walls and it reaks then the wall has to be searched and the dead rat found. they have already become use to the place seeing how the workers leave food etc. around.

The nutras you have in TX are not the Norway rats they have in NY... they are bigger but also a little more placid. BB gun might work... my dad has used BBs to good effect on rodent type creatures infesting our house when I was a kid.

A snake will not be the answer to your problems. If you let one loose you may never see it again. Releasing exotics is a notoriously BAD idea - that's how the rats got there... and this is one of the cases not to fight fire with fire. Any snake large enough to kill these rats will be pretty costly as well, becuase it will have to be a good size before it will be big enough to swallow them rather than be killed by them. Also, snakes do not have a very fast metabolism so if you got a snake it would probably not be able to eat the rats as fast as they reproduce/move in.

You need to figure out how the rats are getting in, and stop that, and also make sure they don't have any way to get food if they're already there.
