so i applied for an internship with a pretty big mega-corporation () and they interviewed me for 2 hours as well as a phone interview tuesday. the phone interviewer (who is the company recruiter) said they would get back to me by tomorrow with a decision. i got a call from my mother in law telling me that some company was calling her asking about me (i put her down as a reference), and i just want to know if i should start getting excited about a new job yet

If they're calling your references, they're interested. Let's hope she told them nice things about you.

A drug test? Are you serious Fallout? You have to do a drug test to get a job?

Depending on what kind of job, yes. I had to have a drug test for my job at the Sheriff's office, as far as i knew, wal*mart did drug testing, many factories and warehouses here do drug testing, drivers get drug testing, all county/gov't here get drug tests. Not only do they get tested before hiring, they have random testing to make sure you're not cheating.

Also, if an employee gets into an accident or hurts himself, boom, drug test.

not sure if i'll have to take the test as an intern, and the company policy is to do "random" testing of new employees but they checked with at least one other of my references, so i hope this means that i check out ok

ok, so i emailed them last week asking about their decision and they said they hoped to be making a decision by this week. so then i go back on the job website i got the original listing from, and they have posted the exact position i applied for *today* on this website. i was still planning on calling them monday to find out what's going on, but should i be worried at all that they're not interested, even though they called my references and stuff??

uh-oh I'm afraid that doesn't look promising moonie... But call them anyway. You really need to have the answer directly from them instead of all this waiting and wondering.

Just a thought: How confident are you in your references? I had a shocking experience once where I was applying for a job and listed one of my past employers who I had had a good relationship with (I thought). When the prospective employer phoned him, he apparently said "she was like a daughter to me but then she left me in my greatest time of need. I've never forgiven her for abandoning me. And she should change her name. I've always hated that name."

Fortunately my prospective employer realised the guy was obviously having 'problems' of his own, and phoned me to warn me never to list him as a referee again! A couple of days later she offered me the job.

So anyway, call the employer. If you don't get the job, ask them for some honest feedback on how you could have made your application more compelling. You might get a surprise like I did!

Dr. Bonke,

Most employers over here have a drug free policy and do testing. They get discounted insurance for doing this.

My company has the same *cough* policy. But they have never tested anyone.

Moon I hope you hear good news soon.
