So, i was bored...

I brought in a water sample from my tank to the LFS. They test it, and say my levels are like all deadly and crap, and told me to buy all this crap that costed like $15...

But what they didnt know was that I checked the SAME water from the tank, and all levels were fine, i also used my friends test kit (he was with me at the time) and all of the readings on his came out good.

Do you guys think the LFS is trying to rip me off here?

(Oh yea, i have seen them use those "dip test strips" for checking pH, but i dont know what they use for ammo// testing)

Did you actually see them test it?

At my store we test people's water right in front of them, so they can see what we are doing and that we are telling them the right levels. While doing this we also explain what each of toxins are (a lot of people don't know) and what they can do to fix their water if there is something wrong with it.

Some stores, however, seem to take the water some place to test it where the customers can't see what the employees are doing.

I'm not your neighbor, you Bakersfield trash.

I would trust my water testing kit better than theres. Ask them what nitrate level there tanks are at. LOL if they say 0 then you should definitely trust your tester.

I had that same kind of problem. I had tested my water and went to my LFS with a sample for them to test. I was shocked to see what their test indicated. They used one of those multi-test strips that you dip into the water, and ALL the results were way off from my own. I wasn't buying it so I came home to re-test EVERYTHING. At the time I wasn't having any problems with a tank, I really did it just for curiosity. Very odd those test results were so different, i'm not sure what's going on with it and just to confirm, this test was done right in front of me.

Where I work, I test right in front of them, and actually show them the results and compair them to the charts.

The only way I try to sell needless stuff is usually just stuff for their own convienance. But then I tell them that we can do that or help you with that for free, or something, so I don't make a sale.

I'm a bad salesman... But I help the customers

I distrust them.....to test a few less reputable, but large and busy shops in town, I did the same with ROed glacier water (we are talking laboratory pure)....on any test where I was not an active observer, my water came back as high in ammonia or nitrites, which was, of course, impossible. I once worked at a chain shop where fish department employees regularly contaminated water samples with water from a jar with a couple of dead fish in it so that they could avoid replacing fish under their guarantee.

That's a scary story, Toirtis ... at the store I worked at over the summer we tested with the customer right there, using reliable drip tests. Most came out cycled but with high or through-the-roof nitrates, so essentially ever customer was told to go home and do water changes. At most we sold 'em a bottle of dechlor.

At my store, we do the testing right in front of the customer, and are to be honest with them. We use the dip strips though and I've found they can be a little unreliable.

I would have to agree, the most common find I have is very high nitrates.

I would also be very suspicious of any store who does not test in front of you. You know, I would think that falsifying results like that for a sale would be in violation of some law, anyone have thoughts on that?

In Canada, it would constitute fraud.
