But once posted on an open forum, they invite comment. If you want to keep your practises as your business the answer seems obvious.

Exactly. People come on here to get opinions, and if that's not what they want then they don't belong on an online forum.

And by posting on a forum, you are giving people the right to share their opinions with you, whether you like it or not. For example, if somebody was keeping an arowana in a 20 gallon tank (which they say in the post), but only ask about what to feed the fish, how could you expect people to just answer his or her question and not comment about the living conditions of the fish?

People here care about the welfare of not only their fish, but those of others as well. If they think a fish is being kept improperly and is uncomfortable or suffering, they are going to say something.

I think the general idea is don't post questions or ask for opinions if you're not prepared to receive a variety of responses. If you're set & decided on what you want to do, don't post.

For some people apparently it is. I've written a couple times recently about an angel I rescued from a lfs. Whoever owned it kept it in a unheated, unfiltered betta bowl that was less than 1g, their reasoning was that 'it was pretty and no bigger than those betta fish'. People like that have it set in their minds what they want to do and nothing they're told will change that. I can only guess that posting in public forums like this makes them feel validated or something.

It is only their own business until they post it in a public forum - thus opening their business up to others. Posting leaves you open to comment - not all of which are going to be supportive or positive. This isn't just in dealing with fish but I see this a lot in different online groups where people post things for everyone to read/see/judge and then get offended when not everyone gives them a pat on the back....if you don't want to hear other's responses then you ought to leave what you have to say off a public forum, jmo.
