Well- i am only a sophmore in high school- and i am thinking about what career i wanna do, and i want to do something with animals, so i thought about maybe owning a pet shop. and i know a few of you on here own one- and i was wondering if you could give me clues on what kind of classes i should take, and how long do you have to go 2 college to own your own business like this? i know i need 2 take some business classes, but i dont know what else? thanks a lot!!!

i've never owned a pet shop, so i have no experience in that aspect, BUT i have worked for a long time in the pet retail industry. In my opinion, you gotta have A LOT of passion for the hobby if you're going to survive with your business, because it's not something you get into to become a millionaire. you gotta spend money to make money. and like all jobs, it can get quite stressful with rude customers, the animals constantly getting sick and just things not going right in general.

but at the same time, if that's something you really have your heart set on, i say, GO FOR IT.

I wrote an article on this some time ago. Although it was centred upon the kind of experienced apposite to the UK pet industry, many of the details should have their US legislative counterparts too. Including such wonders as property rental, tax, pet store licencing etc.
