I've always had a soft spot for the man with a great sense of humor.. However, my first pick has always been the all around "gentleman":

Polite, conscientious and gracious with a good sense of humor

Charming, but not too much. If you genuinely like her, are gentle, kind, dont overly fuss, behave yourself, and are not all over her, she should like you.

I married my husband because he loves me, is a little funny, a little charming, a little sweet, and a little everything nice.

Go ahead and just ask her out.

Chris, I'm in exactly the same situation as you are.
Except that my situation is slightly more complicated and confusing.
Those people I've told will certainly know the confusion I'm in right now.

I guess what's really important is you have to let her know about your feelings,
it may not go exactly the way you want, as it's not going the way I wanted for me.
But at least you've made a start.

What's more important is try to make her feel special,
say lots of nice things about her.
Not garenteed will work, it will get you close even only as a friend.

If you find out some day what exactly girls want.
Make sure you tell me about it. I need to know too, desperately.

My ideal woman is the 5 foot tall 45 year old wrinkly woman who puts on 3 tons of makeup, has enough hairspray in her weave to puncture a small hole in the ozone layer, wears an ultra low cut shirt that says "princess" on it, a fake leather jacket that's 3 sizes too small, and fishnet stockings with 4" black pumps.

She has to spend all her free time at the bar chain smoking some off the wall bottom of the bucket brand cigarettes, chugging brews and complaining about her (3) ex husbands and her trans-camaro.

Janna's perfect man is Bill Nye. I knew it.

I like smart girls: petite, blonde ditsy ones.

Just kidding. I hate to say it, but I place a lot of emphasis on racial preferencing. I am of Taiwanese origin, as will those girls that I drool over (or Asian, at the least).

Tarky, I love you!

I abstained. There isn't just one thing girls like. It is the whole combination that makes a guy. Personally, I go for tall, older guys. I can't stand someone who isn't very smart, because I usually lose my patience with them. Being funny is always really great, but he doesn't really have to be funny. As long as he talks enough to carry on a conmversation, it would be fine by me.

Just ask her. What's the worst that can happen? Even if she says no, she'll know that you're interested and that might entice her in the future. You'll always wonder what if unless you ask.

One question for the guys though- why don't you like the smart girls? They always seem to go for the ditsy petite blondes ].

They shade the glow of it with their mossy-misty costumes,
They wear masks of silk, porcelain, brass, and silver,
So as not to mislead with their own, ordinary faces.

It's different for every girl. Some like strong athletic, some like quiet introspective starving artist

I personally like intelligence. If a person can't debate intelligently, or isn't willing to learn new things, I'm not interested. But then one of my best friends calls me a "fish snob" so I guess I'm just picky.

Lucky me, the first man I met is the one with whom I want to spend the rest of my life.

Ask the girl; you'll never know unless you do. As a woman, I can tell you that women generally like to know that they're desirable. I spent a lonely 21 years wondering why no guy asked me out! Turns out my boyfriend was to afraid to ask me out for a year!

I'm so adjective, I verb nouns!

I'd like a guy not to be too chicken to ask me out. Seriously. I'm almost 20 and I've never even been asked out on a date. She probably won't have this problem because since you say she is petite, since I am suspicious that this problem might have something to do with my looking like a rugby player (a discovery I just made last week when talking with some friends). So really... most guys I am already friends with, I would not have a problem going out with Go for it.

I started seeing someone a little less than 2 months ago and the biggest thing that attracted me to him is his sense of humor. Okay so he's really cute too. We can have a ball together doing the craziest, stupidest things. He's intelligent but not in an annoying way, he's very caring, responsible, has a good job and has just enough of "bad boy" in him (one of those things that some girls like). We have similar interests so we can talk about lots of stuff together.
