quick question:

do you leave snails in your tank alone?

do you try to eliminate them because you "heard somewhere they will cause problems?"

do you try to eliminate them because they are causing problems? if so, WHAT ARE THEY?

what are some of the oddest things you have tried to eradicate snails? did it work? leeching copper from pennies seems kind of extreme, but i am sure some other methods are out there.

i put it in rr because it is more of an idle curiousity question as opposed to a real invert question. i did not want to be flamed for posting a somewhat meaningless post where it did not belong. should it be posted elsewhere?

depends - pond snails i kill in an instant. Malaysian trumpet snails I leave be, until they get too much in the tank, then i'll remove.

My hubby on the other hand....

his 20 gallon is FULL of the suckers (MTS, not pond) and is leaving them there.

Snails eat my plants so I get rid of them. Actually I don't have to get rid of them, my loaches do it for me.

Someone gave me a golden apple snail, which I kept in its very own tank for a while. When I pruned the plants in the main tank I put all the trimmings in the snail tank and it gobbled them up very, very fast.

Eventually I gave the snail to the LFS to save my fish-sitter having to look after it for three months while I was away. Now I kinda miss the little (big) guy.

I have pond snails in my tank, and I don't mind them at all. They don't eat my plants, and do not seem to multiply very quickly. In fact, I really have to look around in my tank to see one of them...

Tee Hee. Give it about a week and you will be swamped with them.

I have only had one outbreak in the three years that I have been keeping fish. Sure they kept the substate super clean, but when people would look at my tank I got tired of the question "Are there suppose to be that many snails."

I now quarantine everything, especially plants, to avoid transposing eggs to the aquariums. I even gently rub leaves and stems of newly bought plants to have a higher chance of not getting a snail outbreak. So far it has worked.

So to answer your question. I don't like them because of the ability they can make a tropical community tank look very unhealthy in a short period of time.

If you do not overfeed, usually the snail population will be held in moderation. I tend to overfeed, so my loaches are around and take care of the extra snails...

I had a guy wait and hound me for about 6 months to post him about 10 MTS! i couldnt get them to breed fast enough over winter.
