Kickin' it off today with a gastronomic one....

xyz...xyz...xyz...xyz...xyz...xyz...xyz...xyz...xyz...

poupics

A mess of victuals made of veal steaks and slices of bacon.

T. Ellwood Zell's Popular Encyclopedia, 1871

xyz...xyz...xyz...xyz...xyz...xyz...xyz...xyz...xyz...

Not seen on menus since 1892......... food revivals. Not always a good thing. Also poses a problem for drive throughs... difficult to serve a mess of victuals in that situation.

Is that WOTD from Aussie vocabulary?

That would make a good subject matter to use.......... some of those Aussie words, & then explain to the rest of us what they mean.

Fish patty babel is going to pm you with that one.

I like arcane words... Aussie words well, we could start another thread for that if you like....

Babel, thx for joining it! Love the word.....

{fishpatty 'poupics' is not an Aussie word. I included the source in the post}

New Word;

xyz...xyz...xyz...xyz...xyz...xyz...xyz...xyz...xyz...

foot-stove

A contrivance for warming the feet; a foot-warmer; specifically a tin or sheet-iron box with a wooden frame, provided with a pan for live coals in a bed of ashes, formerly carrried by women to church in cold weather.

source: William Whitney's Century Dictionary, 1889

xyz...xyz...xyz...xyz...xyz...xyz...xyz...xyz...xyz...

I may revive this practice for my office. It is sometimes arctic to me but comfortable for others. My internal thermostat must be on the blink.

Foot stove, also known as my cat . My mother grew up in New England, they get some chilly winters (at least they did back when she was growing up!) and she'd tell us stories of one two or three dog nights. Nope, not the music group, it was the weather mans way of telling you how cold it was going to be that night!

Philoprogenitiveness
(phil-oh-pro-gen-itive-ness)

The instinctive love of offspring. A hybrid word {from the pseudoscience of phrenology} from Greek philos, loving and latin progenies, progeny.

source: Daniel Lyons American Dictionary of the English Language, , 1897

xyz...xyz...xyz...xyz...xyz...xyz...xyz...xyz...xyz...

fish. Decidedly lacking in philoprogenitiveness as a general rule. Hedgehogs. Now they got it in spades.
