Don't let it get you down. Once the emergency is over, take a look, and see if you can figure out why yur filter decided to malfunction. Then take steps to stop it happening again. Worst day I had fish wise was when my mother put her hand in the aquarium I had when I was a teenager, and decided that the water felt cold to her, so she whacked up the heater. She didn't bother to look at the thermometer (which was on the FRONT of the aquarium) and consequently, the aquarium temperature was whacked up to a whopping 130°F. Needless to say, I lost the whole lot. Including the only Anomalochromis thomasi that I have seen then or since, a brace of lovely Silver Tip Tetras, and several Nannostomus trifasciatus Pencilfish that I'd spent months doing paper rounds to earn the money for. They'd been in there 2 weeks with my prized thomasi Cichlids, getting on famously together, and starting to colour up beautifully. I came back home from school and found them all exploded at the bottom. To give you an idea, back in the 1970s, trifasciatus Pencilfish were £3 UK each. At a time when the exchange rate was such that £3 was equivalent to $7 US. And in the 1970s, you could buy some very nice fish for that price. Took me something like six months' worth of paper rounds to get the money for those babies. There I was, blissfully happy, with the little guys swimming around nicely, then one day I come back to find out that they'd all been wiped out. But then I had a mother for whom I could do nothing right. And who regarded my passions for various activities as malicious sabotage of her mania for keeping the house clean. Well I'd call boiling all my fish malicious, wouldn't you??? * still angry after all these years ... * ![]() |
