what does the ying & yang mean?

Yin-Yang represents the ancient Chinese understanding of how things work
is this right

or is this right...

Two forces in the universe, according to a Chinese theory: yin is the passive, negative force, and yang the active, positive force. According to this theory, wise people will detect these forces in the seasons, in their food, and so on, and will regulate their lives accordingly.

Right... the only things I know about yin and yang come from a friend who's a little bit obsessed with those kind of things, and I must admit that I switch myself off if she goes on about it for too long.

Yin and Yang are opposing forces in nature, like good and evil, male and female, and so on. According to the chinese philosophy they're everywhere and in everything. Yang is the male element and yin is the female element. The yin and yang complete each other (hence the circle shape they form) and each of them has some of the other (hence the two contrasting dots).

In other words, both of your quotes are correct. I wouldn't say it represents the chinese philosphy (it's just the most known symbols of it), but it is definitely in the basis of the philosophy. Yes, some people try to detect those forces in everything, like that friend of mine. It is awfully worrying for her when she notices something which is imbalanced. For instance, the last thing she worried about were gay relationships. She's not homophobic, no, she's just genuinely worried about gay guys who don't get a woman's yin.

Now, if you want to say that she's one of those wise people, it's up to you. For me it's the moment when I switch off.
