Cloudy Water | |
Optimist Fingerling Posts: 21 Kudos: 13 Votes: 2 Registered: 12-May-2006 | Hi everyone. I'm just a little bit concerned because the water in my tank has gotten pretty cloudy. My tank is a couple months old. I have done two 20% water changes and then a 50%. I hear the problem might be due to a bacterial bloom, which sorts itself out. The only thing that is bothering me is that the water has only been getting worse. Is this bad? |

What is the stocking level? How often, how much and what are you feeding? Do you know what your water parameters are, and if so post them here. If you don't have a test kit you can have a sample tested at your lfs. Are there any fish missing? Possibly one has died and is hidden away where it can't be seen. This can cause a rapid rise in bacteria counts which could possible be a cause for your cloudy water. Oh, and by the way welcome to FP!! Jim |

In it, i have 2 Oscars, 1 Jack Dempsey, 1 Brown Knife fish, and a Pictus Catfish. I feed them every morning, starting with a little bit of flakes, Cichlid pellets, and the majority of food i give them is bloodworms. I then feed them a little bit when i get home from school. I don't think there is a fish missing or dead. Sorry, but i don't really know my water parameters. |

They will come in handy, keep an eye on the readings. Welcome to FP and good luck and have fun fish keeping |

Also, what type of filtration system are you utilizing? Is it large enought to handle the size of tank and the bio load that is being created? For the fish that you have I would think you would want at least 5x an hour turnover of your water volume. Jim |

Garofoli Big Fish Posts: 337 Kudos: 143 Votes: 27 Registered: 12-Apr-2006 | That is not enough. You need atleast 600GPH for your tank. May I suggest the Penguin Emporer, That does around 400GPH for only... $40. Chris |

Optimist Fingerling Posts: 21 Kudos: 13 Votes: 2 Registered: 12-May-2006 | Wait one second. My Aquaclear70 filters 300gph. Along with my canister, which filters 350gph, that is 650gph. Wouldn't that be enough? |

They are messy fish though...if you could upgrade the AC to a 110 (428gph), that would be even better. I would invest in a liquid test kit. You should be keeping an eye on your nitrates, since the fish are all pretty messy and will get big. Aquarium Pharmaceuticals makes a good master kit that has ammonia, nitrIte, nitrAte, and pH tests. Its not very expensive either...maybe $15. |

Optimist Fingerling Posts: 21 Kudos: 13 Votes: 2 Registered: 12-May-2006 | Sounds good. I'll get a test kit. Either way, my water seems to have improved a little bit in the last couple of days, meaning it might have just been a bacterial bloom. Thanks for all your help! |
