White hair algae | |
cjp Hobbyist Posts: 145 Kudos: 43 Votes: 0 Registered: 22-Jan-2001 | I have a 10gal. tank with cherry shrimp that has been up running since last November. The water is at 75 degrees, two 20 watt xenon lights that stay on 12 hours. This is on a timer.I have hair algae on the airline that is connected to my sponge filter. The hair algae has turned white in the last week.I have never seen this happen before.Any thoughts on what happened? The algae on the glass is green, this is eaten by the shrimp. That's why I have two lights to grow algae. But have never grown white alge before. |

It may have used up the nutrients in the water it was surviving on or the other algae in the tank is outcompeting it and getting the nutrients first. Tanks will go through various stages of algae for sometimes more than a year before you only see the same types all the time. I'd remove it asap to avoid it breaking down and at least causing more algae growth but it could potentially cause an ammonia spike if there's enough of it. If you want algae then after you remove the dying stuff you can try adding a little plant fertilizer. |
