Hypancistrus sp. (l102)

Common Names: L102
Snowball Peckoltia
Snowball Pleco
Synonyms: Peckoltia sp. (L102)
Family: Loricariidae
Category: Catfish_Bottom_Feeders
Distribution: America - South; America - South
Main Ecosystem: River; The Rio Negro, and the Amazon
Temperament: Peaceful; A peaceful fish, and uncharacteristically tolerant member of the genus in that it will ignore, or even share housing with similar sized loricariids.
Diet: Ominvore; Though they prefer meaty foods, they will eat just about anything. Flake foods and sinking wafers/pellets make up a good staple diet, with freeze-dried and live foods being devoured. This fish is not a very good algae eater.
Care: These plecos should be kept in a tank with caves and driftwood for it to hide in. Plants will often be destroyed, so take caution if you really want to keep this fish in a tank with any live plants. A strong water current and high-oxygenation benefit this species.
pH:
5.5 - 7.5
Temperature:
21°C - 29°C
70°F - 84°F
Hardness:
1 dH - 17 dH
Potential Size: Male: 16cm (6.3")
Female: 16cm (6.3")
Water Region: Bottom; They spend most of their time on the bottom.
Activity: Nocturnal; Nocturnal, though they can sometimes be seen throughout the day.
Gender: The female is black-brown, whereas males have a bit of red in their coloring. Males have heavy odontodal growth, while females have none. Females also have rounder, fuller bodies.
Breeding: The pair should be kept in a tank with soft, acidic water, and conditioned well. These fish are cave spawners, so a cave is necessary for breeding. They will spawn in the cave, and the male will guard the eggs. A current going into or near the cave is helpful, as it helps to keep the eggs oxygenated.

Comments: A good fish for a community tank, but not a very good algae eater. These fish are often overlooked, because their color patterns and spots are characteristics of other plecos, as well.
