Gender: | Hard to tell. Males have a more muscular upper body appearance, and usually have larger pectoral fins with more black markings on them. Females have fatter lower bodies with green eggs that become quite visible at times. |
Breeding: | Extremely difficult. Mainly happens by chance where the eggs are laid on floating plants. |
Variants: | An amelanistic variant (lacking black pigment) of the Kuhli Loach has been bred, though it is seen in stores only rarely. |
Comments: | They can be very elusive during the day, as they are nocturnal. Also, if you think you've lost your kuhli loach, look carefully. They are very good at finding hiding places, these loaches have even been known to swim up filter intakes! This nocturnal loach feels exposed during the day and will therefore be reluctant to be seen in the open unless socialised and reassured by the company of its own kind. Four or more specimens will increase the feelings of security for the fish and may encourage more frequent and prolonged breaks from cover. |
