Care: | Feed with mainly live foods for best health and colour. Flakes can be used. Dense vegetation is needed around the edges and a few large, flat rocks in the middle. Hiding places made into caves and hollows are recommended. <i>Apistogramma borellii</i> is sensitive to nitrates so frequent water changes with a good water conditioner is needed. |

Gender: | The male has brighter colours and is larger with pointed dorsal and anal fins. Be careful though; some males exhibit female colouring to avoid territorial disputes with other males. |
Breeding: | Use an acidic pH (6.0-6.2) and a higher temperature of up to 28°C. The eggs are laid on the roof of a cave or an upturned pot. The female carefully guards the fry but sometimes lacks security with the eggs. Use a ratio of one male to three or four females. |
