Temperament: Peaceful; Peaceful. Mix with other community fish.
Diet: Carnivore; They are not picky eaters, and will feed on a range from flakes to live foods. Live foods will enhance color and growth. These cichlids will pick at the substrate and any ornamentation throughout the day for additional food.
Care: Prefers a tank with lots of plants and bogwood. Rock formations will provide extra cover and may serve as a spawning site for mature fish. This species does not fare well in dirty water, so frequent water changes and good filtration are necessary for survival.

Gender: Females are mostly yellow with very little blue if any on them. Females also have several blotchy black spots on them, which the males do not.
Breeding: Condition the pair on live foods. Apistogramma nijensi spawn on bogwood, or in upturned clay flower pots.

Comments: This is one of the more difficult to keep of the Apistos. They have very demanding water qualities that must be met, otherwise the fish will not fair well.
