Gender: Adult males will grow larger than their female counterparts, and have a more intense color pattern which may also appear on their pelvic and caudal fins. Males usually develop fin extensions at the ends of the dorsal and anal fins. Females will have an intense yellow-gold color with plain or solid color fins.
Breeding: Difficult: Once a pair is established they may bully or kill their tankmates. Provide lots of hiding spots for the female should she need them, as the male can become overly aggressive. The pair will normally use flat rocks for their spawning surface. The parents will normally care for their young up to the free-swimming stage.
Variants:
Comments: Often confused with P. friedrichsthali, the loisellei are more tall bodied and have a bluish-turquoise pattern above the lateral line. One major difference is the absence of vertical bars on the loisellei.
