Thorichthys sp. 'mixteco gold'

Common Names: Gold Mixteco
Synonyms:
Family: Cichlidae
Category: Cichlids
Distribution: America - Central; America - Central
Main Ecosystem: River; Rio Obispo and possibly other surrounding rivers and streams
Temperament: Territorial; Not overly aggressive except for when breeding.
Diet: Ominvore; Will do best on a varied diet.
Care: A varied diet will be best for this cichlid. As juveniles you can start off by feeding a cichlid flake, baby cichlid pellets or fry crumble. As these fish grow the best thing to do is wean them off of flakes and get them totally on a small to medium sized high quality pellet. If these fish are trained young they will feed from the surface and this will open a lot of options as they mature. However, if they are started off on foods that sink, it will be much more difficult if not impossible to wean these fish onto floating foods as they grow older.
pH:
7 - 8.4
Temperature:
22°C - 25°C
72°F - 77°F
Hardness:
8 dH - 15 dH
Potential Size: Male: 17.8cm (7")
Female: 17.8cm (7")
Water Region: Middle, Bottom; Middle-Bottom
Activity: Diurnal; Diurnal
Gender: Males will grow larger and will develop extensions on the dorsal, anal and caudal (tail) fins. Females will have a black blotch in the dorsal fin that is apparent from about the size of 1".
Breeding: This species may take anywhere from 12-18 months if not even slightly longer to fully mature so patience will be needed to breed these cichlids. Once mature, a pair bond will form and the pair will clean off a flattened surface such as a flat piece of slate or the wall of a cave. Once the pair have spawned the male will guard the surrounding area while the female is in the nesting area with the eggs or fry.

Comments: This is an absolutely gorgeous species once fully mature. The problem with most Thorichthys is that they can take up to 2 years to fully color up, so if you are a patient person then this fish will definitely have its rewards.
Care should be taken not to overfeed this or any other Thorichthys species. Overfeeding can and will lead to bloat which will usually result in death. Also, the health of this species will begin to decline at temperatures above 78F. These fish will do best kept in t
