Temperament: | Predatory; This predatory species shouldn’t be kept with fish smaller than its mouth, otherwise it may eat them. Larger fish may be attacked and eaten as well, or just simply killed. Other hawkfish are usually not tolerated unless a male/female pair of this species is obtained. All fish added after this hawk run a high risk of being attacked. |

Care: | Carnivore, who’s diet consists of crustaceans, preferably shrimps and crabs, and is also a voracious fish eater. It does not eat sessile inverts, but it may cause minor physical damage to them. In captivity it should be fed a diet of fresh or frozen meaty foods. A bottom dweller found at varied depths on the reef, most between 15 and 30 feet near sandy bottom areas with coral heads and rock work. |

Breeding: | Has not occurred in the aquarium, but wild spawning has been observed. At around dusk, the male courts one or more of the females in his harem and chooses a ready partner. The pair rises off the substrate and releases sperm and eggs at the peak of the spawning run. The fertilized eggs then join the plankton in the water column. |
Variants: | Several color variants are known. The most common version is light brown and has a white stripe on its posterior flanks. A second form has a deep red color with no stripe. The third type is dark brown to near black and also lacks the stripe. Minor variations of these color types are known, with some of the darker fish possessing the white rear stripes. |
