Reason: | hith is a specific pathogen, in this case usually hexamita intestinalis, bad care increases the likelihood of infection but doesnt actually cause it. | ||
Old Text: | Oscars, like most other large cichlids, can be very susceptible to Hole in the Head (HITH) disease. There are many theories as to the causes of HITH, though the consensus among most aquarists is that the cause is usually either poor water quality and/or malnutrition. The best way to avoid HITH is to feed a varied diet of good quality prepared and live foods and maintain good water quality. Excellent filtration is a must and as are partial water changes, preferably on a weekly basis.
