I moved out a few months ago, but left my tanks at my parents' house because I don't have space for them at my new place. I have been dropping by once or twice a week to feed/care for everything, btw.

Anyway, my Jack Dempsey's have fry! So I guess I missed the spawning, the eggs, and the hatching. There's a huge swarm of the l'il buggers, and they're really cute!

I don't have time/space/money to properly raise them (move the male to a different tank, culture/feed infusoria, etc), so I'm just going to let nature take it's course. There is plenty of java moss (and a few other misc plants), rockwork, driftwood, hiding places, and various algaes in the tank, so I think they'll be fine. I'll just keep the parents well fed/happy and hope for the best for the fry. When the fry get bigger, I'll start feeding powdered foods, pellets, frozen brine, bloodworms, and probably mysis (you can feed mysis to FW fish, right? I bought the stuff for SW fish)...

The fry are a little under 1/2" at the moment, and both of the parents have been taking care of them (usually taking turns being in the middle of the swarm of ~150-200). The parents colors have been very dark, and their stripes have been rather well-defined.

I don't think I really have any questions (I've bred FW fish before, done a lot of research on breeding JD's, and kept JD's before), but if you guys have any comments, suggestions, or demands for pictures, let me know

Thanks

Wow! That's amazing!

What'll you do if most of them grow up and you have 100 fish?

I'm guessing that less than 10 will survive to adulthood unless I move them to holding tanks so they don't get eaten (yes, I am going to keep them all well-fed, but that doesn't always keep them from going cannibalistic). Either way, I'll be selling them to any friends who want them, and the rest will go to an LFS here in town when they're juvies. I'll keep one or two with their parents until they're a decent size, then sell them.

<-- still exited about them

The babies are still doing good

I have yet to take pics of the parents, or of the babies' growth, but I probably will next time I've got my camera out.

I've been feeding them all daily, and the babies have been eating crumbs from the parents (also crap out of plants, algae, etc)... they all seem to be doing well.

There are definitely less babies than there were before, but that's expected... I'm guessing there are at least 100 still, though. At this stage, they almost look like baby convicts because of their stripes o.O

Anyway, I just thought I'd give you guys an update
