hey guys,i have 2 flowerhorns sharing a tank, they are male and female, but they are not a pair, she hates him with a passion,so i have a divider in place, now for the last like 2 months, she has layed thousands of eggs, she just keeps on pumping them out batch after batch,(she has even layed a batch while a nitrate spike is going on)so if they are not a pair and they will never be,ive tryed many times to get her to let him fertilize the eggs, but she just flogs him, why does she keep laying all these eggs, only to watch each batch get wasted, any ideas

I dont know alot about flowerhorns. What sized tank do you have them in? Maybe if they were in a larger tank she would accept him.

Before you criticize someone walk a mile in their shoes. That way you're a mile away and you have their shoes.

hmmmmm never sen a flowerhorn before in person, dont think there commonly available in australia. flowerhorns are hybrids of centeral amercan cichlids so they probably behave similarly to jank dempseys, firemouths, red devils etc. ive heard of 2 females spawning together (pretty common with oscars) but spawning with no mate? maybe it wants a mate other than the male youve already got but thats easier said than doner as i already wrote flowerhorns are not easy to get in australia (well not on the east cost at least as i havnt been any further west than dubbo, not including overseas). i mjust ask where did you get your hands on flowerhorns, not that i want one but just out of curiosity.

hi

mmmm room isnt a issue, there in a 75 gal,and the divider is in the middle,so thats half a tank each, bubblerain as for being similared behaved to rds and jds, they dont even come close to the aggression of a fh,well all the ones ive had anyway,if i told you the list of fish that she has killed and bullied you would spin out,she is at the size now where she takes chunks the size of a 5 cent coin, out the back of my hand when she has eggs, fhs are at best,a terminator, where i live,i never had trouble getting the fhs,ive never herd of them being hard to get, they do get expensive, but i found them easy to find, anyway getting back on topic,any1 ese got ideas as to why she just keeps on laying eggs?

She'll lay eggs if she wants to! It seems she wants to spawn but doesn't like her man. As long as she's in good condition and has a place to do it, she'll continue laying. I don't know why she hates your particular male so much. Have you tried other FH males to try to find one she will pair with?

If you really want babies, maybe next time she lays you can swap the fish around? Put the male on the side with the eggs, her on the other side so she can't kill him, and see if he will care for the eggs? The worst he can do is eat them, that doesn't seem any more wasteful then what is happening to them now.

I would suggest you try to find a man she likes! Or ditch her and find a nicer female for the male.

Here's something you could try. Found this at http://www.flowerhorn.co.uk

It is best to keep your Flowerhorn cichlids in a large aquarium to breed them and to decorate the aquarium so that there are hiding places for the female and so the male doesn’t always have a clear line of site to everything happening in the aquarium. Flowerhorn cichlids can be very aggressive towards their partner and a well decorated aquarium is not always enough to protect your female from the male’s advances and aggression. Keep a close eye on the couple and if you see that the male is too aggressive you should remove the female from the aquarium. You will in that case have to attempt Flowerhorn breeding using a separator so that the male can’t get to the female and hurt her. Leave a small gap between the bottom of the aquarium and the divider. The gap should be too small for any of the fish to fit through. The only decorations in the breeding aquarium should be a flat stone placed with the female next to the divider. This is done to force the female to deposit her eggs on the stone where the male still can fertilize them thanks to the gap between the bottom and the divider. The filtration in the aquarium should when attempting Flowerhorn breeding be arranged in such a way that the water flows from the males side to the females side as this facilitates fertilization. Flowerhorn breeding can be achieve in most water conditions but a neutral pH level and a temperature around 28°C / 82°F is optimal.

yeah ive tryed plenty of males, she is just so fusy, its like the bigger and older she get,the worser her aggression gets, ive got a deposit on a nice robust malefh,im just waiting untill i get my water back to normall(had a nitrate spike),and then im trading up the smaller male fh i have now,for the bigger nicer looking fh,ive bred my other 2 fh,many times b4,but this female i speak of is just so fusy,i just keep on trying because she is truely a nice looking fish and i rekon her babies would look even better, but,i will say this if the male that i get, isnt compatible with her,im calling it quits, then im guna trade up the both of them, and get like 10-15 texas babies, and try for a pair out of them,i havent had a texas pair yet...oh and thanx to loiness for the info to,
