Id just stick with koi..or goldies

Snorkling with my lunatics would be a total blastI think This could be a really cool tank...but I think we need some clown loaches in there also They would get to be huge And Calli how huge would my little danties get in that size?I don't think they would be my little danties anymore.

Going along with the pacu idea you could probably find a lot of goldfish and koi that are now in the wrong homes and have a little rescue (i mean a HUGE one lol) I wonder if clown loaches would breed in there...

why not try and breed clown loaches

Personaly I would divid the tank into two section and have a little walk way down the middle of it for side veiwing. This way you could have two different sections and types of fish. You could also try to section the sections creating a few "tanks". No matter what you end up doing with it I wish you the best of luck! It will probably be tons of work but I bet it will be super cool!! How many people get to set up a swimming pool for a fish tank? Things like this just get me all pumped up!! = )

how about some turtles?

whatever you do, you HAVE to get it set up so you CAN swim in it! That would be the coolest thing ever! I assume it's already got the steps and the ladders.

Just a Quick Update.

I placed about 10 guppies in the pool today just to kick start the tank/pool. I know it would take about a month to cycle all that water, but it should be worth it. I wonder how many guppies I would end up having in a month's time I also turned one of the filter drums into a little plant tank. Holds about 500litres with 3 inchs or black gravel and some plants and some guppies again Love guppies That will also help the pool to cycle.

The pool has about 4 rows of steps about 20cm high for each step. That has been delived into smaller ponds designed for breeding small tropicals as well as growing up some juv plants to go into the main pool. The dividers are made out of eggcrate with a layer or plastic mesh over them to ensure that no other fish would be about to escape or swim into those smallers compartments. Seeded gravel have been placed into the 4th and 3rd steps for the plants and bare tiles for the breeding compartments.

One thing that really worries me is the ferts for the plants also co2...I would need a large supply of these. I have already ordered some nice plants for the plant tub and also the growout plant tanks. Some nice Red Tiger Lotus, some nice water lillies and a few large water lotus. Hopefully once upgraded the lighting and also the bulbs to plant bulbs they should grow nicely.

He would have to have a Class 2 category 1 reptile keepers licence. To qualify for this he has to have a Class 1 reptile keepers and have kept reptiles for atleast two years.
Pig nosed turtles are harder to find here than green pythons and are worth a few grand each.

If I had that set up I would fill the thing with DoJo Loaches. About 10,000 of them and several African Butterfly Fish LOL.

my main concern is observing what's going on - i would absolutely be swimming with goggles (i'm dreaming of a south american biotope heaven - 1000's of cardinals and rummynoses....imagine swimming in with them!!!!!) but i think you may want to get surface fish too - hatchets? butterfly fish? (butterflies will help keep yr guppy population down, too) pencilfish? if not, then i think you need braver species which don't care about coming to the surface, i used to keep quite big outdoor ponds full of swordtails and platies when i lived in malaysia. they looked great from above. hehehe - i just imagined u with a snorkel and goggles just lying around the pool with yr head underwater...don't get dishpan ears!!! and wash out the gel first!!!

If I had a 28K gallon pool/tank I'll add Heaps of Frontosa's

I think you should have 20 archerfish in it.

Keep a large, insect infested bush overhanging the centre of the pool and then sit back and watch the fountain show!.

go with koi. There are some many different colors and patterns that it would look nicer than a bunch of tetras. You could keep about 90 full size koi in there. You wouldn't have to worry about heating. Koi are also very personable.

Had a chat with calla the other morning, and I added a few Koi to help with the cycling, once the cycling is over, they will be going into a friend's koi pond Tropicals it is! Still trying to find someone to hook up the solar panels for the heating...so far i got like 40 or so 300watt jagers...from previous discus breeding.

I got a nice plant order in today, 20 red tiger lotus very expensive, but they are in the shallow steps growing up. Anyone got suggestions on co2? I guess the guppies will have to return to my 2ft, I would be adding a nice school of neon tetras, a few baby sailfins, thinking a male and 2fm zebra plecos for the breeding area, lots of diffrent types of corys, a few nice angels, and a whale..lol...just joking... Planting this thing will be heaps of fun Just wondering if it would be a good idea to have fine gravel for the base...since its going to have a huge surface to fill up...what should I do? I was thinking only pots with gravel or somesort of sediment and plant the plants and lillies directly in them, just like koi ponds. Im trying to keep the water as clear as possible so you can actually see the fish swimming. A new Aussie Aquarium Plant club is going to start soon, so obtaining plants should be very easy. Just worried about the gravel.

I am also trying to obtain a nice show piece driftwood for the middle of the pool, with some nice plants growing on them. Trying to make it look as natural as possible. I was also thing a few fw stingrays, but im scared they might eat my tiny fish.

I like all those koi pics dude_dude.

The thing is if the pool is 1.5 metres deep, will you even see the cories.

The pool will look great once it gets fully planted.

Guess I will have to put on my scuba gear and head south to see them

How are you going to plant the pool?
Are you going to add gravel to the bottom only and just plant the bottom of the pool?
I dont know what the pool looks like so Im not sure if the sides are staright up/down or not.
What I'm asking is,
If the sides are slanted would the gravel not
slide etc...

if it was my dream i would cut a corner of the tank off with glass and have a sitting area so can see the fish from side on, not just above.
then i would have 3 options.
1) koi - love them
2) rocky african lake setup,
3) amozon planted, bogwood etc, with discus, angels, cories, catfish?, tetras etc maybe some rams.

the dream of a shoal of 100 discus, me sitting in a lazy boy chair, cool beer in hand just watching.:%) we can just dream.

Thats what I was thinking....... with the glass side viewing area... I was going more twords the half and half thing. After getting fish started in there could you immagine the breeding thats going to go on in a tank that size?? Baby fishes every where!!

I'm not picturing anything because despite several promises I've seen no pictures and for me its just too far fetched to be true

i dont know about you guys, but i agree with resle on the reef idea, that would be awesome. Another good idea...Pahrahna's anyone? the ideas are endless, but to me having a pool full of sharks would be sweet, you might want to look into some sort of cover or hood to keep out leaves, garbage and toxic rainwater of the sort...

Why would someone need a reptile keeps licence to keep them as pets?
Second, my local pet store had a Fly River Turtle breeding pair for sale about 2 weeks ago for $150 dollars.
Apparently we have a local breeder. I didnt know they were worth much money....

Dont have a pic of the pool yet, but I got pics of some the inhabitants, was able to get hold of a digicam today, but didnt end up going to my uncles. All of these fish are in quartine at my place. Just got the fish last night and they have already starting to munch on the cucumbers. Im very proud of these fellers and hope they will have a happy life in the pool.

4 of the plecs at 12cm each and 2 knifes at 8cm. Also 3 other Plecos, but they are too small and they hide alots, so no pics provided there. But I do promise the pics of the tank is coming in very very soon.

They arnt common pleco... I got a few L14s but images are hard to take with them hidding in the driftwoods.

Shekoi, they are a species of pseudacanthicus, not a boring old pterygoplicthys. Also, Steve, I don't even want to know how much that L-14 cost you, but I'm freaking jealous. Scobinancistrus areatus is like, my dream fish.

Cuppa, are shekoi those yellow/tea colloured carp? I like those. There was a tv show on where they showed a $1m example raised by a monk in japan. It was quite a fish. It would want to be for a million.

Hey there,

Now this may have been mentioned but if your pool has a vinyl liner, it WILL kill your fish as the chemicals used in making the liner never really go away... You need 45 mil pond liner.

And remember for how ever long the pool held water it was running through UNDERGROUND piping which absorbs the chemicals over time, very little but it happens.

Also if you use a pool size pump even if the returns are covered with whatever it will suck the skin right off the fish....way to strong A large pond pump will do well.

You can use a real pool filter, stairight system 3 are the tops...Cartridge system so you can hose them clean.

Oh for water changes, plumb in a backwash

MR_CICHLID I think this is a regular underground pool with concrete sides and bottom. Have you decided what your going to do as far as stocking it. Go with a large SA cichlid community ie Oscars, Chocolates, Acaras, and Severums. For driftwood just cut down an entire dead tree and start sterilizing it.
