I'm not picturing anything because despite several promises I've seen no pictures and for me its just too far fetched to be true

i dont know about you guys, but i agree with resle on the reef idea, that would be awesome. Another good idea...Pahrahna's anyone? the ideas are endless, but to me having a pool full of sharks would be sweet, you might want to look into some sort of cover or hood to keep out leaves, garbage and toxic rainwater of the sort...

Pig nosed turtles are harder to find here than green pythons and are worth a few grand each.

Why would someone need a reptile keeps licence to keep them as pets?
Second, my local pet store had a Fly River Turtle breeding pair for sale about 2 weeks ago for $150 dollars.
Apparently we have a local breeder. I didnt know they were worth much money....

Dont have a pic of the pool yet, but I got pics of some the inhabitants, was able to get hold of a digicam today, but didnt end up going to my uncles. All of these fish are in quartine at my place. Just got the fish last night and they have already starting to munch on the cucumbers. Im very proud of these fellers and hope they will have a happy life in the pool.

4 of the plecs at 12cm each and 2 knifes at 8cm. Also 3 other Plecos, but they are too small and they hide alots, so no pics provided there. But I do promise the pics of the tank is coming in very very soon.

You dont have to believe me that im doing the pool, because I dont believe im doing this too, but I am...

They arnt common pleco... I got a few L14s but images are hard to take with them hidding in the driftwoods.

One of my workmates friends may be able to loan out a few carp if you want something to cycle the pool with.

Its ok Troy, I grabbed a few large Kois from my mate's pond. Hopefully they dont die cause they are his pets and I'll feel sorry for them and he will kill me.

Shekoi, they are a species of pseudacanthicus, not a boring old pterygoplicthys. Also, Steve, I don't even want to know how much that L-14 cost you, but I'm freaking jealous. Scobinancistrus areatus is like, my dream fish.

Cuppa, are shekoi those yellow/tea colloured carp? I like those. There was a tv show on where they showed a $1m example raised by a monk in japan. It was quite a fish. It would want to be for a million.

Hey there,

Now this may have been mentioned but if your pool has a vinyl liner, it WILL kill your fish as the chemicals used in making the liner never really go away... You need 45 mil pond liner.

And remember for how ever long the pool held water it was running through UNDERGROUND piping which absorbs the chemicals over time, very little but it happens.

Also if you use a pool size pump even if the returns are covered with whatever it will suck the skin right off the fish....way to strong A large pond pump will do well.

You can use a real pool filter, stairight system 3 are the tops...Cartridge system so you can hose them clean.

Oh for water changes, plumb in a backwash

MR_CICHLID I think this is a regular underground pool with concrete sides and bottom. Have you decided what your going to do as far as stocking it. Go with a large SA cichlid community ie Oscars, Chocolates, Acaras, and Severums. For driftwood just cut down an entire dead tree and start sterilizing it.

Yeah...just boil it in a REALLY BIG pot...

My own two bits, for planting the pool add natural red river sand at the bottom. It really isnt sand, its like very very fine muddy gravel and you can get it for free from any rivers close by.

We get it in India from our sanctuaries and stuff, and I am planning to use it for my big clown loach tank when I buy it. It will only be a couple of 100 gallons unlike ur swimming pool, but a natural substrate would be nice.

And dont forget the pictures.

Now, surely, I want to see the pool as badly as you all do, but 5 hundred posts of "We want pics now, you liar" is not going to aid him in posting any faster. Granted, he could very well be fibbing, but again, I'm sure we've all heard enough posts requesting pictures.

O.k, if its a concrete pool, you still have a "maindrian" @ the bottom of it.....which will pull all the sand substrate right out of the pool and really mess up your filters......
This can be done but given the length of time your doing this in I doubt your going to be problem free. this is really a huge job, no matter the kind of pool.

Just my opinion as a pool installer but i think you cut a few corners that could be huge problems later.......

Here's a good question, How do you plan on maintaining water quality in such a large scale with out it being electronicaly done for you?
now you can backwash a pool to remove water, but for that you need a main drain...Problem # 1.

Now this is just my opinion on this one but without taking say 3 wks (min) and thousands of dollars to achieve this it's not properly done.

This has to be the top dream of most of us here, but there's a HUGE difference between a 2000g pond and a
20 000g pool.

I know our downtown Aquarium Restaurant ends up doing dives to work on cleaning, and gravel vacs...yes, they have a gravel vac, but trust me it is a lot longer than our normal 25 and 50 ft. ones:%)I don't think I ever asked them how long it took them to do a wc/gv...maybe I should call up there and ask them

Just to add, African Buitterflyfish should not be kept in something that does not have a top, as they will jump clear out of the water.

I thought I would add that, I don't think it was said when they were suggested to you.

Just thought I would let you know in May's issue of tropical fish hobbyist on page 124 there is a pool that has been converted into cichlid spawning tank, at least the ones who have the mag can see a pic of A pool.

Quite a nice little set-up too.

Junes issue is very good as well, great pics in catfish corner. Also good pics of leafy sea dragons in the salt creep.

Well, I'd love to oblige, however I think that the fact that no pics are forthcoming is rather irrelevant.

Check out all the info that you guys have dredged up! Look at all those fantastic ideas and all the technical info!

There are plenty of people that dream of converting swimming pools into ponds, this thread is a wonderful place to start


And if/when the photographs are forthcoming, I hope all who are fast to judge are just as fast to apologise.

Perhaps this person is too busy working on the pool to be bothered taking pics!
Give them a chance. If I was him/her, and I got called a liar and a fraud, I would probably not even want to show you all pictures.

I would make it into an intire eco system with live plants turtuls crustacians (small aquatic mamles) an unbelivable mixture of fish You could also think about a 2 boats 1 old and falling to pieces for the bottom and a small one witha glass bottom
Ps you could cut costs by breading fish like there is not tomorow imaginhaving somthing as simple as a guppy at 60c each if you have you get $60

It would be cool to make a mini lake out of a pool but the upkeep would be expensive and youd need an extemley powerful filter.

another thing the water changes would be very tedius annd an average pool is about ten thousand gallons so you would need a hell of a lot of water de clorinater, not to mention u wood need a big heater. so i would just stick with a pond

i think this is a cool project, and i hope i can do somthing like it if i ever have a swimming pool, but i was just wondering, what if one of your fish got a illness which might spread or lead to expensive fish dieing, how would you provent that from happening, because it a big pool with lot fish when yor finshed so wouldn't be easy to spot a ill fish.
