Well,

If your significant other thinks that he likes fish and you think that they don't fit in your tank (based on appearance) then there is only one thing you can do:

Get an additional tank

Would be a good excuse

*nods* they can be expensive fish to cycle with. I've seen them for sale any where from $5-12 EACH.

However I personally recommend a fishless cycle (for the saftey of the fish, and your wallet).

Or cycling with Bio-spira and fish, as that supposidly works with out harm.

I think someone here DID breed them with a regular danio, but unsure of who.

And in theory, because of the way they are bred, they should be more hardy than the standard ZDs which are mass produced without a care as to how inbred they are getting. If you wished to cycle with fish, i'd think they may do better than a regular ZD, but do be very careful, because they cost like 4x the price!

A quick question, what happens if you bred a glofish with a regular danio? Mixed batch of fry or just the dominant genes?

So if they are the same as zebra danios does that mean you can cycle with them?

Thats because they were originally created to moniter water quality issues. The added CO2 may have trigered this. As well as any synthetic fertilizers you may be using.

Agreed, they don't need blacklights...

I don't like how they look JUST with blacklights...they look really weird... possibly alright with both normal and black light, but they're just fine in normal light, imo

I've noticed that they REALLY color up when yer injecting CO2 into the tank (like for plants)... mine turned like a really bold blood rec color

I personally am in support of glofish and what they are being used for.
If scientist want to sell this healthy fish to aid with money to the research then that's also fine by me.

I've owned 13 of these guys (perhaps more) both short finned and long finned varieties.
Very hardy fish indeed! And they are great, very people oriented, they liked to poke my hand while cleaning the tank, I had some that would willing go into my fish net with out having to chase them, and then just lay there instead of flopping around, they were also all hand fed.

You do NOT need a black light to make them look good.
They look great under pretty much any direct light, the more light the better!

Here is one of my old glofish under an small incandescent (screw in) light.

Here are mine in a 30G extra high with 2 florecent light strips.

Two different stock of Glofish compaired next to eachother (each stock will look different, some are terrible looking others are healthy and full of colour!)

" "Novelty" fish in general scare me, but the fact that people mutate them scares me even more "

Glofish were developed by biologists to show where polluted water ways were located. They are not harmed by the glowing andd IMHO there isn't anything wrong with them.

Heres a thread where we discussed the ethics of glowfish:

I haven't posted in awhile, but now I need to. Yesterday to my horror my significant other decided to go unsupervised to the LFS and brought us home some new friends for our tank.
]:| He brought home 5 cherry barbs (3 female and 2 male - which I'm somewhat ok with) and then four "glow fish". I've been looking for info on them and this is what I've found so far (links below) - it sounds like something out of a sci-fi movie and I don't think I'm very happy about it. We've got the mutated zebra danios (the pink ones in the pic). What does anyone know about these guys?? Any additional info is appreciated.

well, I don't know where I've been but I had never heard of or seen these things before but apparently they've been around for awhile now. I don't know, they just don't really "go" with the other fish in my tank, they look.......fake??? Ah well, I guess he should be able to have some fish that he likes too.

They say that the GM fish probably aren't as hardy as normal ones, but IME, they're a LOT hardier

I used to have a lot more danios, but my 'GloFish' is the only one of 'em left (survived hydrogen sulfide, huge temp spikes (stupid light cooling system didn't start... killed my hillstream loaches ), etc)... all the others died off

I don't really mind the whole GM fish thing (other than their price tag ), but yea, they're a bit different

Thankfully i don't think the red ones glow in the dark. THAT would be a bit of a fright.

What about their health - has it been effected by what has been done to them?

The glofish is a man made genetic alteration of the zebra danio. There is no special care needed for them, just treat them like you would a regular zebra.
