My LFS has ADF's (Hymenochirus curtipes) and I'm wondering about a couple in a 10 gallon tank with a Red Clawed Crab.

Am I asking for trouble? The crab is pretty small, about 1" body, but could/would he go after frogs?

Thanks,
Tim

no, a red claw crab would rip a frog into tiny shreds before you would know it, also if I'm not mistaken, they have different water parimeters.

Thanks for the replies.

A clerk at my LFS said not to do it, but I'd like more than just his opinion

My crab is definetly predatory - he's killed two female red claws - and learned how to effectively catch ghost shrimp - he doesn't eat 'em, just kills 'em!

Since he has the tank to himself now, he climbs out of the water and waves his claws at me when he's hungry. I put some food on the end of a chopstick and he holds on to the stick with one claw and feeds himself with the other! He's very bright.

As for water parameters, it's at about 78 degrees, medium hardness and some salt, which according to my LFS is just right for ADF's.

I also have a 20 gallon tall with livebearers - think that'd be a better mix?

What kind of quarantine should I do if I introduce frogs to my livebearer tank?

Thanks again,
Tim

If I remember correctly, ADFs and salt don't mix. Well, they will, but the frog will probably die. Do some searching, read as much about them as you can before buying.

Just goes to show you how you can't trust what an LFS clerk says. He specifically said the salt would be fine for an ADF!

Thanks guys,
Tim

yes the 20 gallon with livebeares would be a much better choice for him and he would have a better chance there!

GOOD LUCK

Sorry I didn't mention it but I keep about 1 tbsp. aquarium salt per 5 gallons H2O in my livebearer tank. Is that too much for an ADF? I can scale it back a bit but they seem pretty comfy with it.

pH is 7.4
kh 120
gh 120
temp is 78 degrees

How much bioload should I factor in for each ADF - like in inches per gallon like fish?

What is a goor ratio of boys to girls with ADF's?

thanks so much,
Tim

ADFs don't like any salt AT ALL. This is why you don't see saltwater frogs, becasue it is leathal to them. If you were interested anyway, ADFs can live in 1/2 gallon of water if you take care of it. If you wanted to get a 2.5 tank with a strong light, you could have 3 - 4 frogs. I keep more females than males. I had 3 frogs (1 m 2 f) a betta, and a snail in the same tank for a year. No probs, but bettas might gett a little nippy. I think 4 would be fine, but if you want to be safe, maybe 3...
