You can still find some Hikari stuff in Malta, but i think that it's till stock lasts & no more will be imported.

At least we have a ban on smoking in public & closed areas.

I have been trying to get more Cichlid staple and gold for my oscar who loves it and of the five places I have tried all have given the same reply and only one had a little left in stock due to low turnover on the jumbo pellets, guess there aren't too many foot long fish in huddersfield.

I know what you mean about the legislation regarding vitamins whilst cigarettes are still widely available.

Earlier this year we had a "food scare" regarding a "possibly carcinogenic" dye being used in wocester sauce which was then used in small quantities in processed ready meals. This caused outrage and vast product recalls, with people asking how this could happen. People were interviewed for TV in shopping areas replying that they were indeed concerned about this.....whilst smoking!

My lfs told me it was down to a bad batch that was recalled,My clown loaches and plec love them and they wont touch the tetra version, and my local shops only stocked those two brands. Also how come all hikari products aren,t affected as there cichlid pellets are all readily available .

I found this
Hikari Stopped By EU Red Tape
PRESS RELEASE FROM PPI (sole UK Hikari distributor)

As you may already be aware, we have been experiencing difficulties with the import of Japanese fish foods which is affecting the supply of Hikari Fish Food in the UK and Europe

Many retailers are now out of stock of some of the varieties of Hikari while remaining stocks of other Hikari lines are now getting very low

This is due to import regulations laid down by the EU that have not yet been fully recognised by Japan. Kamihata Fish Industries (KFI), the suppliers of Hikari, have been working tirelessly with the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries in Japan and Europe to ensure they are able to approve KFI's production facility so that imports can be resumed

In terms of compliance there is absolutely no problem with regards to the standards of manufacture of Hikari Fish Food, it is just a matter of getting the correct paperwork in place. We anticipate that we will be able to start importing again within the next few weeks and hope that we can minimise any disruption to supply

We are planning to fly in our first shipments from Japan and we will be contacting stockists as soon as we have an arrival date so that we can ensure stocks are back in the shops as soon as possible

We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience this may cause and can assure you that we are doing everything possible to ensure Japan's leading fish food will soon be available to its thousands of loyal customers in the UK

Update 23 September 2005

Great News : most of the Hikari Tropical range is now back in stock, albeit some are still in limited quantity at present

If there is no "Add" button next to any Hikari product, then that item is still not back in stock

Yes, thats the reason I buy the hikari sinking wafers, because of the high fish meal content

Most conventional algae disks are made mostly from fish meal anyways and have a higher amount of fat than other prepared foods, even many carnivore pellets. I'd steer clear from them save the occassional feeding.

I agree, I feed mostly fresh vegetables and used the prepared as a occasional supplement. It does costs more then that the wafers and sinking pellets but the affects are noticable.

I was also told some time ago (2+ years) that they were no longer making them.

Have you tried to contact them direct via WWW.

Have a look in [link=My Profile]http://

I've been told by my LFS, after he made some fairly strenuous efforts to obtain them for me, that Hikari Algae Wafers have now been banned in Europe.

Is this true?

I've been trying Google searches to see if I can shed some light on this, but to no avail.

I'd also like to know what on earth motivated this ban if it IS in existence, other than wilful bureaucratic pettiness. And if that sounds like a rant, well the EU has been well known for years for being a rat's nest of red tape, directives and other unwanted dross that has had, among other wonderful side effects, the outlawing of vitamin supplements here in the UK. I'll leave dwelling on the absurdity of this (namely that a UK consumer can buy cigarettes but not vitamin supplements) for another day, but if they've banned Hikari wafers from being imported, then it'll be lamentably true to form ...

At least one of the larger wholesalers here in Sweden still have them in their lists on the homepage. This could of course just be because they havn´t had time to remove them or something.
The others I know of didn´t have Hikari, but I´m not sure if they ever carried them so that doesn´t say much.
I guess within EU anything is possible...

So here I am once more...

I also heared that the Hikari will not be shipped to Malta, as the importing fees of stuff from Japan is very high due to the EU regulations.

I am not sure, but this is what i've heared.

You could always do it the old school way, and blanch some peas for them. Or some zuccini.

I would say you could still order them by mail, couldn't you? It might take days or a week, but they are not going to go foul on you during shipping.

I have been told the same thing by my LFS, traders in Japan haven't complied with the paper work - you know all that stuff about importing clothes a month or so ago? apparently its the same type of thing.......

it is annoying as I have had to swop to pleco chips which the plecos didn't like that much - they both died suddenly about four weeks ago cause unknown.

any way let me know if you find an online source? cos my mollies really liked them as well.
