what sort of lights are on/around that tank? cus ACF are blind, and when they see/find light, they'll follow it, even if it means leaving water

2 of mine did something like that - out of the tank, on the floor, under the door, down the hall, under another door, and into the storage room

Somebody had left the light on in the storage room and the frogs saw it and went after it

I'm glad that yours survived...one of mine that got out died

These frogs may be fairly slow growing, but can grow to 10 inches, possibly more in females and weigh from 60-200 grams!

pete, you are more than right about ACFs, as most people think they only grow to 5 inches or so. However, unlike most fish, they are not very active at all. Therefore, a 10 gallon tank may be sufficent for one, even thought it is on the smaller side.

DJ,
Personally, I have a friend who has a large (8inch) ACF in his 55g tank, and previously had one much larger, he guesses around 12-13 inches. After watching that frog swim and hunt, I know darned well how cruel it would be to keep one in a small tank. He is concerned his 55g tank is too small for the froggy.
I believe these frogs, like any other reptile or amphibian of that size, really enjoy and for longevity and health deserve a nice large tank of 30 gallons or more. Anything less is just not fair to a creature that would love the space.
I recently released my toad back into the wild, cuz in my opinion, a 10g tank was much much too small for my 2 inch toady!

What the heck is your friend feeding those frogs?! Although I could believe an ACF that is 10 in. long, over a foot sounds a bit exagerated. I myself have never seen one over 8 inches, and that was at the local herp show. I suppose if the frogs grow to as big as you are talking about, then they would need a much bigger tank. However, for a normal 5 inch frog, 10 gallons would suffice. I wonder if we are talking about two different species. i know there is another variation of frog closely related to ACFs, but is rarely sold. Or, maybe you have a surinam toad?

And what kind of toad did you realese? If it was something non-native, like a firebelly, you're in for some trouble. I know ACFs are illigal in some states for what they did to the ecosystem.

No No, it was a Western Ground Toad, plucked out of a garden where he was in danger of being killed by some landscaping. He was about 1/2 an inch when I found him, and 6 months later when I released him to the wildlife sanctuary, he was 2.5 inches! He is a local species occuring all across western Canada and the north western USA.
I would never release a non-endemic species into the wild.

my friends toad looks just like an albino clawed, and the old one he had (lived 12 years) was the same type he said.
He feeds them feeder goldies, nightcrawlers, mealworms etc.
He is currently keeping his 8 incher in a 55g with a big pleco (royal), and a Green Severum.
