Current tank occupants are cories, an RTBS, BN, and snakeskin gourami. I don't want harlequins or hatchetfish. I'm looking for something active, maybe colorful, happy...this was a gloomy tank with the evil hybrid cichlid that killed almost every fish.

In researching options I like cardinals, rummynoses, brilliant rasboras, and scissortail rasboras so far. Any other suggestions would be appreciated

edit: also, I think I'm leaning towards one large school rather than two smaller schools.

Congos. In the case of schoolers, Congo Tetras are among the most colorful and attractive fish you could get.

Theresa I am thinking about the same think. I am leaning toward lemon tetras. I had glow lite's once before. They were extremely active and pretty. I just want something different. I am also thinking about black skirts.

Tiger barbs... I love my new school. Very active, and the colors compliment my Rainbow Shark.

Head and Tail Light tetras are really pretty as are Penquin tetras.

Hi Theresa

The Congos are very nice. But they are a decent size so depending on the size of the tank a decent sized school might be a bit cramped.

For a smaller fish Rummies are great, very colorful, tight schooling and peaceful.

For something truly active and entertaining Rainbows are a solid bet. They are a bit more interesting then the average Tetra as they always seem to have a purpose in what they are doing rather then just swimming back and forth. Very active and playful, they are boisterous(but gentle) with their own but don't bother any other. They take great joy in playing and displaying and are very interesting and fun to watch. A nice school of Neon Dwarf Rainbows would be great.

i have recently added a school of 24 juvenile (8 for a buck- an instant school for $3) white cloud minnows to my 150 gal. i cannot vouch for their adult dispositions or colorings, but these little guys are great. tight school with vibrant colors, and really quick. the larger tank allows them to quickly evade their hungrier companions (they are growing rapidly, and should be fine in several weeks).

my black skirts stopped schooling after they got comfortable in the tank. they buddy around now- if that makes sense.

just pick a species that will be comfortable in your tank size, and make the school large enough to be a school. i have been getting mine in groups of 10 or more lately (all community fish under 3" or so). really cool in a large tank.

rummies rock, beckford's pencilfish are such happy little fish, but really, any tetra will look amazing in a big healthy school. the sky's the limit, really.
