Actually...

I'm a senior this year...and will be going away to college.

Since I got into this hobby I've been teaching my dad about it, and he's pretty into it too. He doesn't mind tagging along at reef club meetings, and he plays on some forums and whatnot. He'll have no problem taking care of the tank while I'm at school.

We decided to hook a web cam up to it so I can watch it in my dorm. Idk if that's going to happen...but it's an idea.

If he gets frustrated with the reef...he might hook up a chiller and turn it into a lobster tank...

ALERT ALERT: NEW SPS & ASST. CORALS!!!

i'm going to put a few up now and do the rest latuhhh

I picked them up last night and they had an 8 hour interceptor bath as a preventative in my frag tank. I just glued 'em and put them in early this morning and thought i'd show off a little. Most haven't colored up yet, they're a little stressed. You'll see a lot of the acro's and other SPS are a little brown, hopefully they'll color right back up with time.

You'll see the corals glued in all different ways and in all different directions. I'm experimenting.

Also, there are lots of double shots, since I tried different camera settings.

The tank lights are on, no camera flash.

I'm still not real good with photos, criticizing is welcome!!! I tried multiple settings and I didn't use a tripod fyi. I think I'm getting better. LOL

I forgot to post the full tank shots since I know somebody will eventually ask to see one...unfortunately i'm not so good at taking those for whatever reason.

That looks Great!! When I finally get settled in a place I plan on staying in for a long time, I might have to get you to come help me set something up. I know less than nothing about SW. I am still trying to figure out what I am doing with FW. haha

Really does look great though! (The Tanks and the pictures)

Thanks so much Robyn.

I've been on vacation and haven't been able to tend to the tank so much, but many of the newer SPS have opened up and are now officially "fuzzy sticks." Not everybody is showing color yet, but it hasn't even been 4 weeks so there's much time for improvment.

Here are some updated shots, again taken without the flash, under MH and T5s.

New dragonet!

Not as pretty as my last one that mysteriously vanished a couple of months ago though.

RBTA

new green leather! he wasn't open during the last photo shoot

hopefully he'll grow as big as this guy...

I'm amazed at how nicely my clam has settled in, but I'm debating whether or not to put him on a rock. Squamosa's are rock dwellers, but this guy has been happy in the sand, and I put down plexiglass for him and he never attatched. He moves a lot. *shrugs* I'd rather leave him on the sand...

I now have a PAIR of clownfish. And they have the most nicest colors and markings in the whole wide world.

random paly polyps...

Now for some SPS...

This guy is being weird. Half of him is doing great, and the other half is like...dead.

needs ID-

and:

pink BN - the picture doesn't do it justice again

uhmmmm ugly

these zoos are my favorite thing to take pictures of

needs id - very purpley and pretty, interesting branch pattern IMO

this guy (needs ID) hasn't gotten much color yet, but does have extended polyps, I think I might move him...SPS of this particular type (even though i dont know what the type is) tend to not do so well in my tank I think...

my favoriteeee coral in the entire tank:

again...browned out still

these next 2 are awesome, coloring up, polyps extended, good sized too

(the above blue is a true color too, the MH are on, not just the actinics)

this guy needs an id too...he fell and i'm too lazy to pick him up off the sand, but he appears to be doing okay, lol

last one for now at least...this guy is furry almost one of my favorites though the picture doesn't show his colors

Those clowns are looking as nice as mine. I had about 100 tank raised clowns to choose from at the time too. mine are all grown up now with the male flickering obedience towards the female. They are pretty cool to watch. They were all happy with the water change yesterday and were lookin' pretty fiesty.

I have to say, you have some nice "colored sticks" there Liana. The millepora, I think was that green one, are the only colored sticks that I really like. Too bad they don't like pc's . Are those the same zoos you've always had? if so, they don't look like they've had much growth. Those look like the "people eater" variety, while your others were smaller I think. Myabe it's just the angle or the new camera.

So where's the full tank shot? I love to see the in wall veiw. Everything looks pretty good , nice update.

I love milles tooo. I told you fuzzy sticks are fun.

I'm really bad at taking full tank shots. They never come out good! Any tips?

EDIT: because I didn't answer anything that Matty said

uhm yes they are the same zoos, and they are growing

the clowns are the one thing I dont buy from wholesalers b/c I like to support ORA, and if you really pick and choose you can get some really nice fish i really hope mine decide to use the rbta I put in there...that would really really make me happy

Hold the camera steady. Really, unless you have a tripod, be prepared to take a few pics. I generally take 10-20 pics so that I can get a couple to chose from. I turn all the lights off in the room except for the tank, and use a higher shutter speed. Also, since our tanks tend to be blue, I try to use the manual white balance. Look back into my thread to see the difference that the white balance can make. Stick something that's white into a ziplock bag into the water to get a good measurement. That way things turn out the right color. Don't be afraid to play with the settings and see what combinations look the best. Even post a bunch up and we can help you decide, just make sure to keep track on paper the settings you used on what pictures. Babel would probably give you better advice than me anyways, my pics aren't that great, but they get the job done.

The plumbing associated with a marine aquarium bever ceases to amaze me.

When I took my jaunt to Maidenhead Aquatics, I was able to see their plumbing. The protein skimmers are as tall as I am, two hefty units two feet in diameter that look as if they're built for industrial use. There's also an industrial sized RO unit supplying the water for water changes - most units sold to hobby aquarists can supply something like 10-20 gallons of RO water per hour peak, which means that if you're running a monster aquarium like David Saxby's you need to run the thing continuously for a WEEK to make enough RO water for water changes! Well, this RO unit can deliver 200 gallons in an hour. Probably costs the company a small fortune to operate, but then they sell RO water in containers to customers without their own RO units, so they recoup some of the costs that way.

Oh, for those who have yet to experience the civil engineering wonder that is David Saxby's reef aquarium (to give you an idea how big this monster is, the pipework contains 100 gallons of water on its own ... ), then this thread should be quite an eye opener for those who arrived here on the Board after I posted this and missed it ...

I suspect if David Saxby can get his hands on one of Maidenhead Aquatics' industrial sized RO units, he will, even if it costs him £2,000 to do it ... because with his scale of water changes, it would actually make sense for him to buy one ...
