Java moss tied to rocks or driftwood make excellent places for babies (and adults) to hide. Hoping that there must be a word for everything I mean... |

Then I saw some ones with eggs at the store and bought them. Well sure enough, after 3 months I was out of shrimp. Then months after that I notice I've got a little guy! He lived a long life. He was always green... I think he ate java moss whereas the store bought ones at the fish food I think. |

No fish (they will eat the babies), maybe a single apple snail added (will kick start the infusoria in the tank as well as clean the glass). Setup: 5 gal tank, sponge filter, lots of java moss (collection site of infusoria) Use water that is aged and treated for chloramine and heavy me Good luck ![]() The Amazon Nut... |

Depends how many hiding places and what fish you have. With lots of rocks, wood, or plants and only top swimming fish like tetras you could probably raise ghost shrimp without problems. With little to no hiding places or fish like cichlids and gouramis most of the baby shrimp would probably be snacks. |

Would Malaysian Trumpet Snails work insted of the apple snail? I don't have a sponge filter just a normal hanging filter with some panty hose over the intake. Will that work or do I need the sponge filter??? I have java moss and lots of fake plants in the tank that my ghost shrimp love to climbe all over. I also have the marien iodine I add to the water. Let me know if this is all ok and if theres anything I need to change thanks. Last edited by ashes at 09-Nov-2005 12:38 |

I put some bbs in the tank and turned off the filter so they could move around easyer. Some answer to my above questions would be great so I know weather or not to turn the filter I have back on or just get a sponge filter. Thanks again for all the help! |

The bacteria dies after about an hour and the stuff left in the filter could turn toxic. You do need at least an airstone in the tank to provide oxygen but I don't know how good baby ghost shrimp are at avoiding being sucked up by a filter. There shouldn't be too many problems feeding them since they will pick up bits of food left on the bottom of the tank. Something like shrimp pellets seems like it would make good food but any sinking food should work. They'll also pick bits of stuff off the moss. |
