Does anyone know about how often they molt? I have 5 and keep finding shells stuck in my filter uplift tubes. So right now I guess they are molting at a rate of once a week. I just want to know is this normal?

Hi,
Check out this link:

http://www.thekrib.com/Fish/Shrimp/

and this one:

http://www.aquariumfish.net/catalog_pages/misc_critters/shrimp_ghost_p2.htm

I've tried ghost shrimp, and cherry shrimp and all were
gone within a day or two. Seems I was feeding my tetras...
Ah well, next tank...

Depends. Younger shrimp will molt more often as they grow and how often depends on how fast they are growing which depends on water conditions and food. Even with adult shrimp there will be some variation based on water conditions, temperature, amount of food, etc... I've heard some say their adult shrimp molt every couple weeks and others only see a molt every couple months. Also certain things can trigger them to molt like moving to a new tank, a large water change, or other changes in environment. I have too many to even keep track of their number much less when they molt.

Your one stop shops for all things shrimp related are:

Pet Shrimp

Shrimp Crabs & Crayfish

The first site fills in some gaps missing in the second and vice versa, which is why it's a good idea to hop between the two and cross reference.

The latter site contains some information on moulting, but doesn't specify a time frame between individual moults, presumably because this is tremendously variable across species and also age dependent ...

Thanks for the help. They seem to be growing very fast. I don't know if they just like my water or what. They were all about 1 inch when I got them. The largest is now just a tad over 2 inches and the smallest is roughly an inch and a half.
