Hi All,
I was just thinking about adding some red cherry shrimps to my 10g tank, which is currently occupied with 5
corydoras hasbrosus, and 4 beckfords pencilfish,
and a large group of ghost shrimp.
What Im thinking is, how many shrimp in total,
at adulthood, would be suitable in this tank.
I have no idea how many ghosties are in there,
but I have 5 more pregnant females that I can see,
and tons of nauupli swimming round.
The tank is super heavily planted and has alright
filtration.
I have heard, to allow 1/4 gallon per shrimp.
So that means 40 in a 10g tank would be suitable.
However, there is no mention of whether or not this is
with fish or sans fish.

Also, would ghost shrimp and cherry shrimp interbreed?
Thanks for any info/thoughts, you can provide.

Honestly, I think forty shrimp is overdoing it, even without fish. If you have, say, twenty ghost shrimp now, I personally wouldn't put more than five cherry shrimp in the tank. That's a lot of animals, and they're going to keep breeding and breeding. If you can do something with any extra shrimp, that will help prevent them overcrowding the tank. I'd just be worried about food for all of them. Each shrimp doesn't eat much, but large numbers can consume a lot.

I sincerely doubt that the shrimp can hybridize, as they are from different genera and will not mistakenly breed with the wrong partner. They are easy enough to tell apart.

And when he gets to Heaven, to Saint Peter he will tell: "One more Marine reporting, Sir! I've served my time in Hell."

If your ghost shrimp are managing to multiply then your cherries probably will too. Luckily most stores are quite happy to take extra cherry shrimp. I would probably keep the number of adults in the tank around 15 but you may only need to start with 5-8. Given the right conditions these guys can really increase their numbers.

While lots of shrimp hybridize the ghost and cherry shrimp are definitely too far apart to accomplish it.

Cool,
well I plan to sell some of the young ghosties to the
pet shop or privately. (LFS here sell them for 5.99 each, so I should be able to get at least a buck a shrimp).
They are reproducing like mad.
Im glad to hear they wont interbreed.
Thats exactly what I didnt want.
I also have a 5g tank, which I could easily use
for excess shrimp if needed.
Are cherry shrimp tolerant of temps around 76f?
How about the ghosts?

76 is fine. Just keep it below 82F and cherries do alright. Ghost shrimp are so hardy I've never bothered to look up their preferred temperatures and never had an issue with it. I get ghost shrimp for only a quarter each here but cherries are around $6 each and I've seen them $10 each. I ordered a bunch of cherry and rainbow shrimp for really cheap off aquabid. The person also lists on ebay occasionally and there are several cherry shrimp only breeders on both.

Hey Sham
thanks for the info!
Im getting these cherries for 10 shrimp for 20.00,
or 2.00 a shrimp. I think thats a great deal myself!
Round here, cherries run about 10.00 each,
ghosts are in the range of 5.99-6.99 each
at most LFS.
Only petsmart sells em cheaper, 89 cents each.
Dont know why the LFS think they can ask 6 bucks each
for the little things, they breed like rabbits!
