I always use carbon in my filters, and i usually do a water change every week or so. I am pretty sure that thats not the problem

Not a 100% sure about where you live, but here copper is used almost exclusively in commercial projects and very, very little in residential. There are many parasite that can be introduced that prey mostly on snails.

Be aware that a lot of commercial veggies use not only pyrethrin pesticides which are harmful to most inverts, but also even organic gardeners use nematode worm preparations to kill slugs and snails. Obviously this could lead to a fatal infestation in your snails.

Organic yes, environmentally sound, NO.

If you did use a copper based medication you can try using caprisorb to remove all the copper. [link=http://seachem.com/products/product_pages/CupriSorb.html]http://seachem.com/products/product_pages/CupriSorb.html" style="COLOR: #C000C0[/link] You should never use a copper med to treat a tank you plan to put inverts in. It's difficult to remove copper and if you have any porous decorations you may never get all the copper out without tossing the decorations.

If the meds are on everything in my tank what should I do? How am I going to be able to fix it? Shoudl I just tear down the whole tank and start over? Would I be able to clean my plants and rocks and such? Should I jsut forget snails, and if so what else can I use to clean the algae? I have a pleco but he it is jsut WAY too much for him to handle evidentally... If I do have to take it down that woudl be a good excuse for me to upgrade the tank to maybe a 15 or 20 gallon tank lol.... What shoudl I do???

I'll just reiterate what Sham already said.

Ick Meds kill snails.

Water changes DO NOT remove them 100%.

If you used carbon during the treatment, you should replace it with new carbon after the treatment is over, since it will leech the meds back out.

If you used a copper-based med (like Aquari-Sol) it can bind to your decor and remain the the tank indefinitely.

Since the snail died within 24 hours, I see no other reason. Snails are very hardy except when it comes to chemicals and metals.

I have a 10 gallon freshwater tank, I work at a doctor's ofice and we have a few guppies and maybe 2 cories and a betta in the tank. I had 1 Huge gold apple snail in my tank and everything was fine, I got a new guppy and the tank caught ick. A friend of mine took my snail for a while until i could cure the ick, and shetook too long to return my snail. I bought 2 more, they both died with in 24 hours. Then my friend finally returned my big one, and he dies a day or two later. I tested the water, I even had my friend test the water she works at a pet store. She said everything was fine except the nitrites were a little high but, that was normal because it was about time for me to do a water change. I can't figure out for the life of me why all these snails died, and why soooo quickly..... I had done several water changes before she brought my snail back so it wasn's the medicine for the ick. I had to scrub the algae off the sides of the tank it was sooo filthy so i know they had plenty to eat. If you guys have any ideas please let me know Thanks.

Did you put carbon in the filter to remove the meds? Ich meds are quite deadly to snails and water changes alone won't remove all of it. Chemical filtration by carbon or similar media would do a much better job. Also carbon uses itself up in about 2-4weeks at which time it needs changed or it will start leaching out what it's absorbed plus other things like phosphate. Old carbon could also lead to snail death.
Does your water conditioner say it also removes heavy metals? Inverts are far more sensitive to heavy metals than fish or people.

Thank you guy for that insight, unfortunately i don't think it is either of those things, this office is only about 2 yrs old,it doesn't have copper pipes, and i only had him in the tank for about a day or so, so i doubt they starved to death... is there anything like a parasite of some sort that could have killed them? I have had snails here before and they were just fine for a long time. I just can't understand it. and I had a typo before its a mystery snail. It has been a while since I have been on here and i don't remember if they are different than apple snails or not, anyway if anyone has any other ideas that would be great.

It could also be a higher level of copper in the tap water. I live in an area with higher copper naturally in the water plus have copper tubing for water lines. Call your city hall for their current water test if that applys to where you are. Good luck. Jan

You have to feed apple snails, they prefer any green edible plant or vegetable slice. They cannot survive on algea alone. I had some that would come to the surface and eat floating pellet food. Anyways, maybe that will help you a little bit.
Good luck!
