A dwarf crayfish might be able to hold its own. Procambarus Hinei or Shuffeldi are good ones. I see them and other small crays every so often on AquaBid and have had very good luck keeping them. You want to look for a cray that will only reach about 2" and has small claws. These are detrius eaters and will clean your tank quite well. Provide them with small caves to molt in (since this is a time when they are fulnerable to stress and possibly getting picked on by a paradise fish).
Alternatively, you can try some of the large filter-feeding shrimp that get to be 2-3 inches long. They are completely harmless, not aggressive at all, and the paradise fish may think they are too big to pick on. They need good water movement to help them feed.

Hoping that there must be a word for everything I mean...

I am unfamiliar with this species, so I couldn't say. You want to avoid shrimp or crays that are likely to tear flowy fins. If this shrimp is a macrobrachium species, then no, they are probably not compatible. If the shrimp is only 1 inch long, then I'd also say they are probably not compatible.

The vampire shrimp, or even the bamboo shrimp are both
peacefull, and are filter feeders. I could see why you would
choose them since they are much larger than the algae eaters
and lack the appendages of the machrobrachiums They
may be large enough not to be considered a snack, but if by
chance the paradise fish consider it, they could--nodoubt--
badger it to death. It is worth a shot, and the larger size
would definetly help deter the paradise fish. They are,
however, a poor choice if you want algae eaters.

HTH,
Megil.

How about one of these babies, this armoured fan shrimp is over 4 inches long and has some way to go yet. It even makes fully adult Angelfish back off with its spiked front legs. They dont really attack fish but can defend themselves rather well, since its a fan shrimp though, feeding it is the trickiest bit.

heres some info on them , look under cameroon armoured shrimp.
