I'm interested in buying some show quality bettas for breeding, and of course my LFS can't help, so I turn to my best friend... INTERNET!. I've found a few shops online but none really impress me... I'm looking for reasonably priced pairs ($20-$40) with shipping under $30.

If anyone knows of a place I'd really appreciate it.

Erm... sure you did!... Well not really... I was looking for pairs a few days ago... The chat just lit a firecracker under my... butt. Thanks for the link, I'll be sure to check it out.

Also, is there any particular kind of betta that's really hot right now? I've been out of breeding for a very long time.

Aznb0i that I know from a few betta forums is getting out of the hobby and selling off his fish on aquabid pretty nicely priced(and with free shipping)
Here is a link to his auctions if you're interested.

Mr John I don't think that you are actually going to find a real "show quality" betta for that price range (not to say you won't find any that are rather stunning). Real show quality bettas are indeed quite expensive. There is a guy who sells nothing but show quality (not to say he is the only one...) check out the pics in his gallery (my favorits are the opaques) they are trully awesome...

I don't know where you can buy them. But reading lately on forums on what type is getting popular are:
White Males
Yellow Males and Females.
Does not matter on what type.

Some of our threads re: colours on Bettas.

Aquabid's your best bet, and make sure before you go that you know what a quality fish looks like, or you can be easily suckered in. Hints: in a solid color, there should be no wash; reds really shouldn't have irridescence, nor should blacks; there's no such thing as a "halfmoon geno" and if you want to spawn HMs, you need to start with HMs; females with a number of branches in each ray of their caudal (branches = splits into two rays) are better, preferably four or more; if it's 180 degrees but the outer rays are short, curved, or both, it's not a halfmoon; if it looks very long in the tooth, er, fin, don't buy it, it's too old to be worth the price; if you like what one person has on offer, check out their website. Also, a really professional-looking website (ie doesn't look like mine) is, although obviously not a proof of good fish, almost always a guarantee of good service, someone very dedicated to their bettas, and someone in it for the long haul with bloodlines to show for it. And don't be suckered in by color: at this point, you're better off with incredible fins over some showy Cambodian or what-have-you that's lacking in that department. And look for brother/sister pairs, but also look for breeders who offer the choice of an unrelated betta of the same strain or a safe cross color (ie not a red female for a blue male, but perhaps a steel female for a melano male). These may not show up on Aquabid, but the website or an email can suss it out. And if you can't see a picture of the actual fish you're buying? Better safe than sorry, no matter how respected the breeder may be. Sorry for the lengthy lecture!

Thanks everyone: D that was really helpful.

When I said "show quality" I didn't _really_ mean that kind of show quality, but I'm sure it sounded that way. What I really want are just some _really_ attractive bettas and I can breed and maybe sell locally.

I've got one of Aznb0i's actions bookmarked and if the end price is decent I'll be sure to pick it up.

Again, thanks to everyone for your help.

I'm thinking about one of the following...
http://www.aquabid.com/cgi-bin/auction/auction.cgi?fwbettasd&1091040664
http://www.aquabid.com/cgi-bin/auction/auction.cgi?fwbettasd&1091051608
http://www.aquabid.com/cgi-bin/auction/auction.cgi?fwbettasd&1091039553

Which one is best?

Those are all beautiful fish. Can't advise as to which pair is best because I do not breed or show bettas. Personal favorite is the red butterfly. If no one with breeding and show experience gives you any tips as to quality, go with the ones you personally like the best. After all you are the one who will have to live with them. Good luck.

First one's your best bet, IMO. The other two have stunning coloring, but that's much less important than finnage, where they're lacking. Even for local sales, the better fins you start with, the better fish you end up selling. If the first is from a marble or butterfly line, see if you can get a marble relative (or non-relative from good lines) and a solid sister, then you can "mix and match" as it were.

EDIT: OTOH, it worries me that this seller labels the first one a BF when it's so far from being an acceptable one ... that's usually a "thing to watch out for." Not that the fish isn't more than good enough for your purposes, but what does that say about the seller? And I'm not at all impressed by his feedback - not that the percentage isn't good, but the raw numbers imply a very short-term foray into bettas. At best he's at the start of his game - you're better off with established stock, which can be gotten for the same prices or better if you keep your ear to the ground.

EDIT Pt 2: You might also look for DT HM males, or DT females with ST/dt males - the doubletail genes lends itself to lovely extended dorsals that call out to people, even if they don't know anything about bettas. V. good for sales, although of course watch out for those foreshortened bodies.
